Question regarding FMC routing to runway

If I program a flight between two points on the FMC, and then select a specific runway, the FMC creates a point on the extended centerline to intercept prior to landing on the runway.Yet when I try using the autopilot, instead of flying to this waypoint on the extended centerline, it always ignores it and when directly abeam the runway, the autopilot turns the plane toward the runway itself.Is this the way it is supposed to function?Greg
