TCAS on 777

Recommended Posts

I'm puzzled. I've just tried a flight in the 777. All went well right up until I was almost landed. I was flying online and could see other aircraft on the apron. At about 200 ft the TCAS started to give me a "Traffic" warning. OK, no probs, I can see the aircraft on the ground well clear of the runway. But then the plane started to make a sweeping turn away from the traffic and unfortunately I landed in the fields !!I ahve TCAS in other aircraft but not one as compex as the 777. Does the TCAS in the 777 actually take avoiding action if the AP is engaged ? I always assumed it was an advisory and the pilot made the decision to avoid based on the TCAS read out ? Probably serves me right for being lazy and using autoland. Drew

Correct on the recipt of a RA the autopilot would be d/s'ed and the avoiding action would be done manually as the AP does not take avoiding especially in the horizonatl plane, TCAS 3 is still being developed, which would give horizontal movements with a RA, but again, its still down to the pilot to act on the recipt of the RA.If not experianced what you have just described, but it may be down to the AFCAD at that airport.Cheers
