Taxi thrust issues on the 757 possibly resolved

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, Well I was stewing over this for a few days. I just wasn't happy with the reason Norman gave me regarding the reasons why our 757 can't taxi for peanuts at breakaway power. So I've come up with a great solution that has absolutely no impact on the aircraft's performance in the air.I don't want to get into the specifics about exactly how I accomplished it (me and a colleage from Delta Virtual Airlines who has also beta-tested with the 777 team came up with this), but it works excellent. There is no modification to any .dlls, and again it does not affect any of the airborne thrust curves. At medium weights (180-220k) you can use breakaway power to begin rolling, and reduce to about 29% N1. As your ground speed approaches 25-30kts, you can reduce to idle and the aircraft will maintain or very, very slightly accelerate. At max takeoff weights a little bit of thrust must be maintained throughout the taxi, but nowhere near the 40-45% required previously is needed. The fix I've worked on is for the PW2040 series engines, but it can be adapted to the RB211 with almost no additional work.I do hope you PSS management give me an honest listen. I am more than happy to talk to Rob Young about this and I'm also willing to let you use this fix in a future FDE patch without any problems. Please advise.-Shane OlguinDelta Virtual Airlines MD-11 Captain

Shane,I know peanuts about FDE work except what I have gleaned over the years. What I do know is that many folk who specialise in this kind of thing all have said the same thing as Rob Young. Who am I to argue?

I haven't experienced this taxi problem and haven't tweaked any files. My 757 breaks away at 35% N1 and then at 4 kts GS I pull it back to 28% and it will maintain 16 kts GS from then on at 195,000 lbs WT., maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones. Even at 225,000 lbs taxi wt. I only needed 29% N1 for the same GS.All in all I have only experienced the VNAV descent problems that have been posted about, She's a real fine bird and hand flies beautifully. Also experience the NO Flare on landing using Auto Land, yet it tracks the localizer and Glide slope beautifully.Nice piece of work PSS.

I don't see how this can be. I don't think Rob Young is aware of this method as the 777 experiences identical traits when it comes to the taxi.I'd like to talk to Rob Young and show him what I have. Just because he's Rob Young doesn't mean he has to be closed to ideas.

For what it's worth, I don't have any problems with the T7 during taxi, I haven't purchased the 757 yet though so can't comment on that.
