I was about to post this question too. Never really understood what it means. Also when I check some of the textures at Image tool, I find that some of them are at mip level 1 and others at 9. I also read that creating mipmaps causes the textures to appear blurred in FS2002. Hope I will be put on light about this.Dr. Jinesh ThomasResident in Internal MedicineGauhati Medical CollegeINDIA.

Leave mip-maps on if you want reflections in game. When you are doing repaints, DON'T create the 9 mip-maps. Leave it at 1 mip-map or the paint on the aircraft will get blurry at certain angles.Hope this helps :)Shane

If you want to turn the mipmapping on or of in the display settings depends mainly on your own preferences I think. I don't have it selected because I think the textures become unsharp to close to you, but I know a also people who use it (because they find the display to much granular (or how should I call it :)). So that depends on what you're own taste is.The different mipmaps in the texture are used depending on the distance. If you are far away it uses one of the smaller mips, meaning that the performance becomes better.Arno

If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done.

^^That's a better explanation. However, don't create all those mip-maps when you do repaints. It makes the repaints come out kind of...um...ugly.I can't tell you how much time I spend downloading aircraft and then having to extract the mip-maps so the aircraft texture is nice and crisp.;)Shane

I can't really speak for aircraft, but when making scenery it is prefered to include the mipmaps (without mipmaps the textures sometimes even show up wrong). Also it seems to be better for the performance.Arno

Thanks Shane and Arno. For me because of my 4 MB AGP card, all textures on gMax aircraft appear black. The only way I can make them appear is to convert them with image tool to 8 bit or create mipmaps. Is there a way to know whether my AGP card supports ALPHA CHANNELS?Thanks.Dr. Jinesh ThomasResident in Internal MedicineGauhati Medical CollegeINDIA.

"Is there a way to know whether my AGP card supports ALPHA CHANNELS?"I think it's unlikely on such an old card with so little onboard memory. Do you have the option of updating your graphics card ? Even a reletively old GeForce 2 card like I use would be a major improvement, and a newer GeForce 4 even better.Alastair

Thanks! Yes I do have the option of upgrading it. But I thought why not go in for a new system altogether!!I plan to buy a new system when FS2004 comes out. :-)Dr. Jinesh ThomasResident in Internal MedicineGauhati Medical CollegeINDIA.
