Any good planes I can use?

Recommended Posts

I think this competition sounds very interesting, and I would very much like to be part of it. But I don't have any idea at all which airplanes are good. The only propellerplanes I fly in FS 2004, is the default ones, so now I wonder if there is any good freeware planes I can use?//Klas Bj

Hey All,You might consider this freeware plane otherwise go to FSD and buy the Avanti or Cheyenne. This one is plenty fast and if you can land it well it'll do fine. Been used in past races as well.http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID...02ac&DLID=29801Pilatus PC-12This is the FS2002 version by Brian Gladden and Co - there may be a FS9 version. My impression is that it's more important to fly a plane that you know (esp how to land) rather than something fast that your not familiar with.JMO! Take Care! -Ed-

While true flying a C172 won't get you very far when everyone else is flying P-38s and P.180s.That's one reason for the practice sessions, so as to get familiar with flying high performance aircraft under pressures. Many people who prefer freeware choose the freeware P-38 models available here or on simouthouse. Not sure if it's faster than the PC-12, I think it may be close. For the defaults, the King Air can be flown in the race (in fact all of them except the Boeings are legal unless the rules change this year).

I think I will try to see which one is faster without winds...>For the defaults, the King Air can be flown in the race (in>fact all of them except the Boeings are legal unless the rules>change this year). The LearJet is illegal too, right? :)

Some thoughts.Hey, part of the fun is evaluating and choosing a suitable aircraft.Clearly two things are most important. First is speed. It might be useful to test the aircraft at the "critical" altitude--where its speed is best. Set the FS9 weather so that there is 0 wind (going to Advanced Weather). Then see what fast cruise speed is possible--without overstressing the aircraft and keeping fuel consumption within necessary bounds for tanks & flight length. (With Realism high, overstressing the aircraft will register and reset the flight--a crash for Racing purposes.) The key criterion is KTAS (true airspeed will be groundspeed if there is no wind).Second is manageability. Here you want to pick an aircraft that you can manage under different condidtions. (Or as Jeff suggests, different aircraft for different conditions--different horses for different courses.)You need to descend and land--pure speed is less useful if the aircraft requires extremely long landing sequences which incorporate slower maneuvering speeds. And, of course, not all airports will have long runways--or easy approaches. Further, you want an aircraft with which you are completely comfortable. Typically, faster aircraft are more fiesty. Other things being relatively equal, it is far better to have an aircraft that you can land at night in crosswinds than one that you can land only under ideal conditions. (Consider the quality of the modeled avionics as well.) One of the beauties of the RTWR is that you often encounter unexpected challenges.Of course, a crash sets the team back 2 hours. So, from the team's point of view, you want to avoid risky aircraft--getting somewhere fast only to crash is way worse than getting somewhere at a moderate speed. Or, much better, you want to pick a suitable aircraft and practice a lot. There will be incidents--but we surely want to minimize them as much as possible. I would feel especially sheepish if I picked the P-51 because it is cool, only to crash on landing because I was inexperienced with its foibles. I can only guess about my teammates' feelings...Best to all,Mike

I don't consider the Learjet an aircraft, rather thinking of it as a lawndart ;)

Well put Mike.We went through the last 2 competitions without a single hull loss and I'd like to continue that tradition this year.

Just grabbed that one for a quick eval.Very Frame Rate Hungry on my machine, complicated GPS use, (GPS NAV switch) You have to hit enter on the old kln to enable GPS Autopilot. read the documentation in the zips. (there are a few). You also have to manually install the panel in order for it to work. Flew pretty good, not the fastest out there, but seemed stable enough through a few approaches. Also took out the starship, kind of hard to slow down, but a fast ship to be sure.JOIN The AVSIM RTW RACE FLIGHT TEAM****************Grab My FREEWARE Voice recognition Profiles here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=58334]Cessna 172 Voice Profile[/a][a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=60740]FSD Avanti Voice Profile[/a].You will need the main FREEWARE Flight Assistant program to use it, get it here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=genutils&DLID=39661]Flight Assistant 2.2[/a]

I rather take my FS2004 default Kingair 350 turboprop over PC-12, which leads me to my next question.1>. Can the default prop planes in FS2004 be used in the race?2>. Which props out there can be used for the race using FS2004 in addition to the default ones in FS2004?The ones I have seen being used are from CFS. Can these be used in FS2004?Thanks to anyone that can help..Sean.

Yes, default prop planes can be used, so can many others both freeware or payware. Your Choice. You can take a look at the RULES for this years race here:http://mw0.ath.cx/%7Ematt/RTW/rules.htmThe rest of the rules won't be disclosed until 12 Noon Esatern Time Saturday.DCC's P-38 L variant looks to be a winner as well.It can be found in the Library here, just also be sure to read about using the WEP (war Emergency Power). If you use it wrong you pay a price. :-)P-38L V 2.2http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID...04ac&DLID=61078Very fast aircraft and it is Freeware.Regards,JoeIn order to use the external tanks you need to remove the slashes in the aircraft.cfg file //Best P-38 Tips from the Readme in DCC's File:"2) The visual model makes extensive use of so-called 'reflective textures.' Be sure this setting is ON. The setting can be found through the main menu by selecting Options / Settings / Display ... / Aircraft tab, "Reflections." This setting may adversely affect display performance, but is required for the model to look as intended. I also recommend setting the aircraft textures size to Massive to see the details, but again, this affects display performance.3) Landing light: Use the standard Landing Light command (Ctrl+L) to turn it on/off. Note that you can adjust the aim of the beam with ctrl+shift+[num pad number] (Num lock must be off).4) Occasionally I experience unpredictable behavior with the light switches. If you have any trouble with them (such as the panel lights being turned off when you turn the landing lights on, or the tail strobe is not illuminating the tails) try the the all-lights-on command (typically the 'L' key) and then use the switches.5) Use the spoiler command (typically '/') to deploy/retract the dive recovery flaps.6) There three visual models -- without external tanks, with 150 gal tanks and with 300 gal tanks. In order to use the external tanks, follow the instructions in the [fuel] section of aircraft.cfg file. 7) Please see documentation (P-38L_Doc.html for more details, including acknowledgments)"JOIN The AVSIM RTW RACE FLIGHT TEAM****************Grab My FREEWARE Voice recognition Profiles here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=58334]Cessna 172 Voice Profile[/a][a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=60740]FSD Avanti Voice Profile[/a].You will need the main FREEWARE Flight Assistant program to use it, get it here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=genutils&DLID=39661]Flight Assistant 2.2[/a]

I created a test flight which I have posted over at my place for some comments and a couple of newr threads as well.Interesting stuff, to be sure, and I am looking for some feedback.Regards,JoeJOIN The AVSIM RTW RACE FLIGHT TEAM****************Grab My FREEWARE Voice recognition Profiles here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=58334]Cessna 172 Voice Profile[/a][a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=60740]FSD Avanti Voice Profile[/a].You will need the main FREEWARE Flight Assistant program to use it, get it here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=genutils&DLID=39661]Flight Assistant 2.2[/a]

Sonar,The P-38L is a superb recommendation. It is freeware. And excellent freeware in the sense that it is nice to look at and has a delightful feel to it.It is plenty fast (not the fastest, but in the ballpark). More importantly, it is relatively easy to fly and--critically--to land in one piece. (Though you do need to practice a bit...all fast fighters are a bit demanding.)Good choice, Joe.Mike--------------------------------------------------------------BTW.As we all understand, any crash on landing means the team loses 2 hours! We may have a mishap or two, but let's try to avoid crashes with aircraft that we haven't yet learned to fly. (I simply love the ** P-51 but cannot dependably land it in poor weather. So with my limited skill level, I'll stick to easier birds. :-roll )--------------------------------------------------------------
