Team AVSIM Practice thread #3

Trying this leg in the FSDzigns Connie, just hoping I can land the thing when I get there, but it's the only race-qualifying aircraft I got right now with that kind of range.....Unfortunately, due to time of day and length of leg, I gotta fly this one offline, but will try to pop in somewhat regularly with updates...

(From the office.)Can someone check to see that one can fly that far south. It would be a shame to keep flying this leg--sitting in the cockpit--if it were not possible...In FS2002 when you got near the pole you got thrown off in odd directions. It may be the case that FS2004 does not let you fly below 80*S.M.

Unfortunately, I didn't even get to S80 to see if it worked, my entire PC crashed and burned at about S73 something.......Wasn't sure I was going to make it on fuel anyways, automixture in this case was wayyyy too inefficient.....So, baton is back at SCRM.... Who's next? :(

Before we launch, heads up on NZWD.I took the Avanti out there (accelerated, with three refueling midfight). No issues getting there, but landing is a problem.Touched down on Rwy 25. As I touched down, I actually went THRU the Rwy, and continued down to the NEXT Rwy immediately beaneath. It was weird to say the least... very disorienting. The pic explain it best: That blue texture in the background is water.Just wanted to let everyoneknow about this. I can take the baton if you want to continue to NZWD, but after I confirm that taking off from there is possible.Alex

Guys,I suggest that we assign a special investigation team to explore the possibility of flying the Antarctic. And report to us when we know more. (Months ago I tried flying in the Antarctic and gave up. It may still be possible, but let's do the investigation in parallel with the flight training.)In the mean time, Alex, why don't you go to either Hobart (Tasmania) or Invercargill (New Zealand) and start flying northward? That way, we can all fly for practice--without having to stub our toes in the mysteries of the melting ice cap...What do you think?Mike

Sonar. If you're checking, listen closely. The database lists NZWD as having two runways: 07-25 and 15-33. When you approach the area, you will see FOUR! Assuming we call them 7L-25R, 7R-25L, 15L-33R, and 15R-33L, the only bad strip appears to be 7R-25L FULL LENGTH. I dropped thru the rwy terrain texture, and the one beneath it was approx 70 - 100 feet below. The others supported my A/C no problem.Item Two: I hope you have reversers or skids or pontoons. ICY STRIP CONDITIONS ARE MODELLED AND BRAKES ARE INEFFECTIVE!7L-25R is the longest strip . Last conditions I saw were CLR, 120 @ 5. Good luck.Alex

Hey MM. If okay, I'd like to try the Anarctic investigation flight. I've done numerous practice legs anyhow, and it'd be a nice change. Are we trying to make the pole?If you'd rather I proceed as directed (to Hobart, etc), just let me know.Alex

Hi Alex,Well, it's been 2 hours since Joe reported. Eagerly awaiting his report. Guess we'll learn more about Southern flying--and about range factors.I guess the next pilot should go on to Hobart whenever he wishes.M.

It is possible to safely takeoff and land on the affected runway, just have to know that you're going to sink through the top runway to the "real" runway underneath... Did a couple traffic patterns there last night before I moved to SCRM and started littering the airport with crashed Connies..... :-lol

Piece of cake, no problem.Baton Free at NZWDDid have to take several pics though to authenticate whole flight. Flew fine down there, no anomolies for me at least. Long Flight though. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/105054.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/105055.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/105056.jpgAnd an Interesting shot to show my fuel management settings.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/105057.jpgInteresting thing, got booted out of Bushnet 3 times until someone turned off their FS nav, and lowered rates. This at least means I have my system running extremely stable, and I kept flying and have been up for almost nine hours now. :-)Regards,JoeJOIN The AVSIM RTW RACE FLIGHT TEAM****************Grab My FREEWARE Cessna 172 Voice recognition Profile here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=58334]Cessna 172 Voice Profile[/a].You will need the main FREEWARE Flight Assistant program to use it, get it here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=genutils&DLID=39661]Flight Assistant 2.2[/a]

Good work. I'd been half suspecting my screenshot tool from causing the crash (I've had a crash while taking a screenshot once or twice before, in each case the screen goes black but FS keeps going).Maybe time to look for another one...
