StoneCold:Thanks for the very informative reply!A couple of points... you imply that when the pilot who's just finished a leg submits the "baton free" post he should attach the flight analysis or Duenna .jpg image with that post. Last year's rules state that the pilot can post the "baton free" post right away and can then submit the flight analysis or Duenna .jpg image anytime thereafetr provided it is before the following pilot posts his "baton free" post. Which is correct or prefered? I only say this due to delays that may occur when fiddling with the steps needed to copy and then attach the .jpg image to the post. Seems faster to just post "baton free" and then at a more leisurely pace make another post with the proper .jpg. Yes, no?How does a pilot "claim" or "reserve" a leg? Or is this not done? Is the entire route already laid our before a team starts the race? Can a pilot scan the route to find a leg he prefers and then state his intentions or do you just have to lurk on the forum and hopefully post your "I have the baton" post before someone else on the team?Again, I appreciate all your help with this!DougDell XPS Gen3 (3.6GHz/800FSB) | 2GB DDR SDRAM | 74GB SATA, 10k RPM (C: ) | 120GB SATA (D: ) | 256MB ATI Radeon X800 XT (Catalyst 5.13) | Audigy 2 ZS Sound | MS Force Feedback 2 | WindowsXP Pro (SP2) | DirectX 9.0c

Hi Doug,You are quite correct regarding the baton posting sequence. The baton free post should be done as soon as possible after landing and stopping. It is the trigger event for the next leg. The confirmation jpg image can be added later. There is no formal "reserving" of legs allowed. My practice was to check the race status on message board and post a notice that I was checking in and available to fly. I also joined the multiplayer race session and used teamspeak to communicate with team members on-line. During the race an ongoing discussion and an informal consensus is developed regarding upcoming legs and pilots. This is subject to change as conditions require. In general preference is given to pilots who have not had an opportunity to fly. It is also desirable to have a backup pilot at the departure airport ready to re-claim the baton if the primary pilot suffers a mishap. Flying scout and wingman is also fun if the race leg is being flown in multiplayer session. We should probably startup some multiplayer practice sessions soon for new participants.Regards,Jeff Williams

Excellent, Derald. Good to have the old veterans back for another round. And new pilots are most especially welcome--bring your friend! We are just putting the finishing touches on the RTWR 2005 Journal. Should be finished in a few more days and then released.Best,Mike

Reporting for duty: Jozef K., location Netherlands, near Eindhoven (EHEH).Tonight I have installed Duenna and made a short flight to see how it works. I also managed to connect to Bushnet (where I happened to meet Jeff Williams; (sorry Jeff to leave so suddenly, I had two crashes: airplane and then FS2004)Ok, so far so good. As a newby to this race, my question is, what to do/read next besides exercising difficult conditions with the PC-12?Jozef K. http://homepages.onsnet.nu/~jkusters/signature.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/138410.jpg

get a faster aircraft :)PC12 isn't bad, but most of us will be flying Piaggio Avantis or Piper Cheyennes if the rules about allowed types don't change from previous years, and those are nearly twice as fast. But mainly, practice until you can dream your selected steed. You'll be flying it in pitch blackness sometimes into unlit airfields in all kinds of weather.

Welcome to Team AVSIM Jozef. Good to be flying together again. Jeroen makes an important point about aircraft speed. A big part of race success is being able to roll off the most miles in the 2hrs allotted for each standard race leg. You should try to have at least one single or twin prop aircraft that is fast, fast, fast! You should be prepared to fly your chosen aircraft in in poor conditions (night/bad weather) into challenging airports (your prior experience in the buzz will serve you well) under race pressure. In addition to the Avanti and Cheyenne (which have proven themselves in prior years) there are many rugged and fast warbirds that are just as competitive.Last year we also flew all of the COF historical aircraft. Ability to competently fly these aircraft is a desirable skill. Last year I had the easy task of flying the Ford Tri-motor. Other team members had more challenging assignments. Special rules will permit the use of specialist aircraft. Last year it was the Concorde. Who knows what it will be this year? Great to have you with us.Jeff Williams (alias Buzz pilot jt_dub)

A very warm welcome, Jozef. Flying through pitch black valleys illuminated only by lightning strikes... is only part of the event. As interesting, and challenging, it the race planning and organization which has to be accomplished as we go along. A real treat!Terrific to have you with us. Excellent pilots are much valued in these parts.Best,Mike

My leg in the DC-3 was easy as pie.... :( But then again, I'm quite well experienced in the FS default and MAAM DC-3's... :(Not sure if I could have kept the Ryan or Wright Flyer in the air long enough to even make a hop from O'Hare to Midway though.... :(
