How do you create an on - screen counter?

I am creating a mission, and I would like to have an on screen counter that shows the value of a counter trigger object. How would I do this?

A timer trigger gives you (in properties) a true/false option for an onscreen timer display.

We didn't create a gauge to display the counter variable (we ran out of time to get that one done). Sorry, we would have liked to use it as well...
