Win Vista OK for FS9 and add-ons?

Recommended Posts

Guest lars_ason

I am considering upgrading from Win XP Pro to Win Vista Ultimate. Being a devoted Flight Simmer I want to make sure that FS9 and some add-ons keep working in the new system.I normally run FS 9 with FS Meteo and Radar Contact 4.2. I use FS Builder for flight plans and fly PMDG 747-400/400F most of the time.Do I have any reason to worry? My hardware is OK according to upgrade advisor. /Lars

Don't upgrade. Wait until you can buy a new system.Vista requires/ uses more resources than XP.Unless you make hardware changes / upgrades it will be impossible to improve your FS performance. If you feel you must upgrade, do so by completely wiping the hard drive and installing everything fresh. If your system is fairly new, or significantly powerful, that might be a good option. But upgrading one OS to another usually ends up with the worst parts of both in my experience.BTW I want Vista and purposely bought a new computer with it. But I am not upgrading my existing computers.

FS9 works very well on Vista. A touch slower than on XP on the exact same hardware but very well.I've also seen reports that stutters are less on Vista than XP. Might be the techniques the FSX uses to minimize stutters as opposed to FS9.The other applications - I don't know. For an upgrade you should not have to reinstall any of the from the source files. If you purchased them in the download version - reinstalls could be a problem.Make danged sure you have them backed up to a CD or DVD.How difficult would it be to reinstall your applications?A clean install on a blank hard drive will be the better path, but can you locate all the media and install files, and take the time to reinstall everything right? It's up to you.
