Bafflingly poor performance out of a Dual Core with 2GB...

Take a system with the following specs:Intel Core Duo 1.8GHz2 GB of PC5300 DDR2 RAMATI Radeon Mobility X1600 128MB GDR3 (Latest Omega drivers, OC'd to 405 on both GPU and VRAM)Intel 945GM Mobile motherboardWinXP Pro SP2Middle of the road, right? Plenty of RAM, right? Now install a few add-on aircraft, Ultimate Terrain, Ground Environment Pro, Real Environment, FS Global mesh, and Active Sky 6.5Go to a municipal airport with no ai traffic, NO CLOUDS, and very little detail. What frames would you expect? 35? 40? 50? No. Try 11-21....with the following settings:Terrain texture: lowTerrain detail: noneWater effects: noneSpecial effects: noneScenery complexity: noneAutogen density: noneMipmap: 4Hardware lights: 6Resolution: 1280x800x32no anti-aliasing set in Traytoolsno anisotropic filtering set in Traytools. In FS9.cfg:[DISPLAY]UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=25TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=100TextureMaxLoad=10Given the above settings, this is baffling, ridiculous, and completely unacceptable. That's when i realized that something is just not right. Yes, the vid card is mobile, yes, the mobo is mobile, but years of FS experience tells me that there is a bottleneck setting somewhere. Of note are the drops in FPS when i pan left or right using TrackIR. I get framerate drops, stutters, and, at times, textures haven't popped into place in time when i pan. This sim is just running way too sluggish. Pressing the 'alt' key to get the menu bar takes *5 seconds* on average to get the menu. Right-clicking also results in 5 second waits for the view menu. Also, textures are replaced with generic purple "pre-load" textures. (Happens when saved flights are first loaded as well).I could understand this performance on a 3 year old machine, but not on a machine of my specs. My GFX card is PCI-Express for crying out loud. I never had texture issues like this on my old GeForce3 64MB card. This is why i think there is something wrong. I understand FS9 is demanding, but come on! Frames locked at 25 and it can't even do that! Panning results in hesitations and FPS drops? 5 second waits for the in-flight menu? No. Not with recent technology. Not with a PCI-E card, not with 2 gigs of ram, not with a core duo CPU. Services. How much stuff do you have running in the background when you are using FS? That can be a really big culprit with this kind of issue. When my system boots up it usually has 35 processes loaded, which is still not bad compared to many systems I've seen. Before I use FS, I always shut down my anti-virus (can be a cause all by itself) and I turn off all but minimum necessary processes. I use a nice little utility called SmartClose and when I start FS I have only 16 processes. Even on my system I can see a difference when I don't. Give it a shot.

I had similar problems with FS9 until I discovered a fix in the Microsoft Knowledge base. Your system should be near perfect so something is wrong. In FS9 Config there is a line near the top: Full Screen=?If the "?" is 1 my system had all kinds of problems like you describe. By changing that 1 to a 0 all my problems cleared up instantly and it was a new world. FS9 tries to return it to 1 from time to time and I just send it back to 0. Strangely I've never seen any discussion on this phenonema but I assure you it came right from Microsoft.Edit: I can't see it being services. You can look at my specs and I'm able to use FS9 with full slider with 50 services still running including multiple downloads happening at the same time, IE, e-Mail and all kinds of stuff. The only negative result is a bit of stuttering.

if fullscreen equals zero, doesn't that mean it is running in windowed mode?

I assume it means something like that but I use both full screen and windowed mode depending on what I'm trying to use on the second monitor but the key is to always have that line set to 0 or everything messes up.

Pretty exciting tip as this is EXACTLY the kind of configuration glitch i have suspected to be affecting FS. Some questions, though. Would a new install already have fullscreen=0? What about a new fs9.cfg? Would that also have fullscreen=0? I guess, my question (for no one in particular) is does FS9 set fullscreen=0 by default?Very promising potential fix, though i've been around to know that such easy fixes are few and far between. It would be incredible if a simple setting like this would be the cause of such poor performance. Will test with baited breath this evening...Many thanks,Jeff

I don't know what default is for that setting but it only takes a second to find out if it works. Back up the config first though."It would be incredible if a simple setting like this would be the cause of such poor performance." My words exactly. It wasn't a subtle thing either, I went from ready to jump off a bridge to ecstatic when I discovered that from Microsoft and changed just that entry.

I did try it and as Al noted, the sim loads in windowed mode. In my default setup, the FPS showed 24.5 FPS. When I changed it to Full Screen mode, FPS indicated 22.5 FPS. Didn't do anything else except start the simulator; no change of view (except moving to Full Screen), no engine start, didn't turn on the master switch.I exited the sim and check FS9.cfg, and the Full Screen= had reset to 1 as I expected it to do. So, on my older system, this one doesn't have what I would consider a significant effect. To the OP: my suggestion would be to make certain that you have AA turned OFF in the simulator and on in the video card settings; Having that option ON in the simulater results in a 50% decrease in FPS on my system.Ed GreenKCLT

Nes,I'm very pleased to report that your fix did the trick! (Change Fullscreen=1 to Fullscreen=0 in fs9.cfg). Just as you said, the change was dramatic. The framerate is now steadily pegged at the locked value of 26. Panning with TrackIR is now silky smooth. Texture loading never lags now and the sluggishness is gone. Even more incredible is that i can now turn on 2x AF in Tray Tools and NOT get a frame drop. That really stunned me. I took a test flight over the Tucson, AZ area (FS Global mesh and Ultimate Terrain) and was treated to fantastic visuals. I am amazed at what this little fix does. BTW, I noticed that fullscreen= is now set to 1 as you observed and YET, i don't need to change it back to 0. Whatever the fix does, it is permanent. Must be a write somewhere. Your timely help put an end to a great deal of frustration. A bit scary actually to think of how much longer i would have "suffered" if you had not answered my post. I think i'll post this on the tips thread. Thanks so much,Jeff

That's interesting Jeff, I'm sure that fix has come up here before but I have never seen it. I had been everywhere for a couple weeks desperately trying to find my problem. I was getting ready to give nVidia heck when I found myself somehow in the Microsoft knowledge base. The article was discussing various fixes to attempt for a problem of my description and for two days I exhausted 8 or 9 of them all much to my frustration. The last or second last item was this "full screen" thing and it was like black and white. I was getting a CTD every ten minutes before that and have only had maybe one since and that was about four months ago.Glad it helped you and expecially glad it helped me.Edit: I thought I had saved a link to that Microsoft article but can't seem to find it. I think it came from something within the FS9 installation and troubleshooting "read me"..

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the entry Fullscreen = 1 or 0 in the GRAPHICS section of the FS9 cfg only reflect the mode that you last exited FS9 in?

I suspect that's what it means too but it also means that if it is at 0 when I fire up FS9 that the Sim is totally unusable, odd as that may sound. Obviously it only affects some computers that way.I'd love to see an explanations for this but remember it came from big brother Microsoft as a troubleshooting fix for major problems.

I think the reason people see better performance when setting fullscreen to 0 is because anti-aliasing is turned off when started in windowed mode, even if you switch it to full screen, AA is off, thus, better performance.

I just bumped into the Microsoft link that I used to find the fix for my huge CTD problem and the "Full Screen=0" fix. It's #8 in their suggested fixes. The fix also worked to solve the problem discussed in this thread, which clearly isn't just a performance issue.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837195/en-usThese are Microsoft Quotations. Problem. "Flight Simulator 2004: The game does not start, the game stops responding, or the game shows the splash screen and then quits unexpectedly when you try to start Flight Simulator 2004 - A Century of Flight"Fix "Method 8: Full-screen device initialization is slow or failingTo run in full-screen mode, follow these steps: 1. Open the FS9 folder. To do this in Windows Vista, click Start, type %appdata%MicrosoftFS9 in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. To open the FS9 folder in Windows XP and earlier versions, click Start, click Run, type %appdata%MicrosoftFS9, and then click OK. 2. Use a text editor, such as Notepad, to open the file. 3. Locate the text fullscreen=1, and then change it to Fullscreen=0. 4. Save the file, and then quit Notepad. 5. Start Flight Simulator 2004 - A Century of Flight, and then press ALT+ENTER to run in full-screen mode. If these steps do not correct the problem, go to the next method "Obviously they aren't addressing a poor performance (FPS) issue here.
