Addon Scenery Causing CTDs

Recommended Posts

Guest KemoF15

Apparently there are pay/freeware airport scenery out there that causes "memory leaks" and eventually a CTD--does anyone know of any offending addon scenery that causes CTD or similar issues? I've got pay (Cloud 9 KDCA, Imagine KCLT/KDTW, Megahubs (KORD/KATL/KJFK/KLAX etc) and free (Grimshaw's KBOS, Ashani's (?) KLGA, KPIT/KMCI--and have not had issues with CTDs till I loaded addon airport scenery several weeks ago.Trying to selectively eliminate the bad without completely deleting addon scenery folder.ThanksKemo

Go through all you're addon scenery and look for any empty Texture folders. If you find one delete it, that will probably be the source of you're OOM's.Dave FisherCYYZP4 Prescott 3.2e 478p 800mhz 1mg CPUP4P800SE Asus Motherboard2.5 gig PC3200 DDR RAM 400MHZGeForce 7600GT/512 OC'dMaxtor 80 Gig ATA 133 HD x2WDC WD800 80 Gig HDAntec 500watt true powerSharp 19 inch LCD MonitorLogitech Extreme 3D pro Joystickhttp://fs2crew.com/linepilot.jpghttp://www.jdtllc.com/images/rcv4bannersupporter.jpg

"Trying to selectively eliminate the bad without completely deleting addon scenery folder"Not necessary at all, use a scenery manager. Just deactivate sceneries and test. http://www.flightxtreme.com/old.htmBTW I had no problems at all with the above mentioned sceneries.Rob "Holland&Holland" de Vries http://fool.exler.ru/sm/fly2.gifhttp://www.aussim.com.au/glasair/public/asg3_banner_03.jpg"To go up, pull the stick back. Dave,Some scenery addons only come with a single .bgl , like to add some lights or whatever to the scenery. No texture .bmp's. Thus the texture folder would be empty for the sceneery addon.Does that mean there could be CTD's because the texture folder for this addon is empty?>Go through all you're addon scenery and look for any empty>Texture folders. It means that there should be no texture folder in this case. Certain scenery add-ons like mesh and landclass do not use textures and only need the scenery folder. If you put the texture folder in there nonetheless, it will work but you'll get a memory leak. >Dave,>Some scenery addons only come with a single .bgl , like to add>some lights or whatever to the scenery. >>No texture .bmp's. >>Thus the texture folder would be empty for the sceneery>addon.>>Does that mean there could be CTD's because the texture folder>for this addon is empty?>>

Incidentally, some add-ons install LC files into your Addon Scenery/Scenery folder and Addon Scenery already contains a blank texture folder. Make sure you do not have ANY LC files in your Addon Scenery directory... -PaulPrimary RigLiquid CooledIntel C2D E6600 @3.2 gigsAsus P5N32SLI-Plus2 gigs Corsair XMS PC6400 4 4 4 12 @810Dual OC'd XFX 8800GTX @ 2 gigs24 inch Widescreen LCD 16XAA/16XAFDual 19 inch LCD'sRaid-0+1PCPower and Cooling 1k Quad SLIhttp://home.comcast.net/~psolk/3monitorsa.htmlBackup RigAMD 4000 San Diego @ 2.72 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2XFX 7900 GTX Raid-0psolk.jpg

I went and looked. Yep, the default MSFS9 Addon Scenery folder has a blank (on files inside) Texture folder within it. Also had a Scenery.dat file.Addon Scenery (folder)Scenery (sub-folder) <<< my .bgl in here (no testure folders)Texture (sub-folder) <<< I removed it, it was emptyScenery.dat (data file)Should the empty Texture sub-folder be left in place? I deleted it as per a previous post here.Inside my Addon SceneryScenery folder I have a few airport .bgl's that do not use textures and there are no Texture folders there. And I noticed, if the Scenery.dat file is missing you cannot get nothing to work or display in the Scenery Library editor (add/edit areas) for Addon Scenery. Initially, I deleted the whole Addon Scenery folder ... was going to reinstall all the addon airports to see if one was corrupt?! and was causing CTD. MISTAKE! I went back and restored them from the trash can. What does the .dat file do anyway. Manually editing scenery folders looks like it could be very dangerous.>Incidentally, some add-ons install LC files into your Addon>Scenery/Scenery folder and Addon Scenery already contains a>blank texture folder. I would let the "Addon Scenery" folder and its subfolders alone. Just pay attention that you don't install mesh and landclass there. Personally, I don't install anything there.

>I would let the "Addon Scenery" folder and its subfolders>alone. Just pay attention that you don't install mesh and>landclass there. Personally, I don't install anything there. Precisely which is why I said:"Incidentally, some add-ons install LC files into your Addon Scenery/Scenery folder and Addon Scenery already contains a blank texture folder. Make sure you do not have ANY LC files in your Addon Scenery directory... "No one said to delete anything...I don't know why you wont just try restoring your textures like I said or disable all your add on scenery and add them back one at a time to test like others have suggested... Paul et alThanks for the vectors--I will, as you suggest, selectively deselect in scenery settings, and see if I can duplicate. Seems I only get the CTD right around 4hrs into flight over the USA. There's been numerous posts on some erroniously named files in Ultimate Terrain that enhance river and lake coastlines, as well as streams. There's a beta patch 1.3 for UTUSA that renames these files. I installed the beta but still had a CTD after 4hours--thus pointing to another area. I've got GE PRO, FE, and FSGenesis loaded as well so the variables are almost infinite. I already checked every scenery folder to see if I could get an easy kill--no such luck!Difficulty is letting the FS9 cook for 4 hours to see if I can selectively deselect the offending addon scenery and/or achieve a CTD---always painful at the end of a long flight ; )Thanks again for the expertise on this forum--saves many hours of pain (often self-inflicted).Kemo

Kemo, That patch does not cure all.... First off, what is actually happening? Do you get an error message or just a true CTD where one second you are simming and the next you are at your desktop?I was the one that started that thread in the UT forums and found the missing texture calls originally. The problem is that Alan did not do the UTCAN files that are associated with UTUSA. Do a search for HL*.bgl, rename them all to .bak and try your flight again. Even if your flight is no where near the Canadian border this can still affect FS. There was also no patch for the original UTCAN and UTEurope versions either...Just food for thought.I would try that first and then start "de-bloating" your add-ons. Good luck Kemo, let us know how you make out and if we can help.-PaulPrimary RigLiquid CooledIntel C2D E6600 @3.2 gigsAsus P5N32SLI-Plus2 gigs Corsair XMS PC6400 4 4 4 12 @810Dual OC'd XFX 8800GTX @ 2 gigs24 inch Widescreen LCD 16XAA/16XAFDual 19 inch LCD'sRaid-0+1PCPower and Cooling 1k Quad SLIhttp://home.comcast.net/~psolk/3monitorsa.htmlBackup RigAMD 4000 San Diego @ 2.72 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2XFX 7900 GTX Raid-0psolk.jpg
