Help with FSX install

Recommended Posts

Guest GLBatRIC

"Help/advice" Guys and gals. I am a teacher with very limited "playtime"(flight time) during the school year. Now that I have a few months to do some serious flying again I have some question about installing FSX. Several months ago I installed a new HDD and placed the old HDD in an external enclosure. The old HDD has my complete FS9 files on it. I did not copy or reinstall FS9 on the new drive. What are your suggestions for installing FSX:1. "Ghost" or backup the FS9 and place on the new drive and then install FSX.2. Install FS9 fresh, reinstall all of the add-ons and then installFSX.3. Install FSX and reinstall all of the add-ons (those compatable of course).Option 3 seems most logical but you all have the most experience with how FSX is functioning with or without FS9 installed. Many thanks for your advice in advance.Gary @ RIC

jeffyou should never apologize for drinking. it just happens, like other natural disasters :) As far as FSX, I don't have it so I dont know. But if I did, I would install it on the same drive I think.

When your time is limited you would be wise not to experiment with FS-X. FS-X has taken a lot of my time. Most of that time was spend tweaking. I never got it to perform satisfactory.Watch out if you ever uninstall FS-X. It damages existing FS-9 installs. Now where are those new FS-X shots from Larry?

>Watch out if you ever uninstall FS-X. It damages existing FS-9 installs.Absolutely untrue! I fly both and both work just fine. But we are probably talking to ourselves. The new guy probably got fed up with ths childish FSX bashing and hightailed it out of here. I wouldn't blame him a bit.R-

The OP stated he has limited time available to enjoy simming. Based on my many hours struggling unsuccessfully with FSX, my recommendation that he avoid FSX was not a joke, nor was it "FSX bashing." It was my advice on how to get the most out of limited FS playtime, and I stand by it...FSX has given me little in the fun department in comparison to the older version, even after a number of "lost weekends" messing with it, both pre and post SP1, on a cutting-edge PC.If that conclusion offends someone's tender little sensibilities, well so be it.RegardsBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VSantiago de Chile

Some addons will fail and you need to repair the registery before you are able to reinstall/activate your add-ons.Absolutely true (happend to me twice and there are numerous accounts on this very forum). Look before you shoot comments from the hip.

>Uninstalling FS-X takes away part of your FS9 registry. I haven't moved to FSX myself but Boshar is completely right and RonB49 is completely wrong. I have already repaired the registries of at least a dozen FS2004 machines where people installed FSX, couldn't run it or didn't like it, uninstalled it and found their FS2004 registry entries had been removed.

Sorry if a few comments on FSX has scared anyone, truth is sometimes painful, especially when you have FS9 installed and you un-install FSX.Gary, if you do install FSX, a patch has been released for it called SP1. http://www.fsinsider.com/downloads/Pages/default.aspx. It's one of many fixes/tweaks you may need with FSX. If you have any issues with FSX after SP1, the FSX forum is their to share you frustrations/enjoyments.Happy FSX - tweaking orHappy FS9 - flying..PS: Jeff (I_fly_on_AWACS) - Sorry to see FSX has driven you to drinking. ;-)Lee

>Look before you shoot comments from the hip.Guilty as charged. I did not read carefully enough and thought the post said INSTALLING FSX would disable FS9. I have heard about the uninstall problem but haven't expereinced it because I've never had to uninstall FSX. Sorry. R-
