White knuckle VFR approaches

Recommended Posts

Guest DocW

Hi,I'd like to collect some challenging VFR approaches, those with very short fiels and things like trees, rocks or other obstacles in the glide path. Preferebly bush flying ones. Have you any recommendations there?I am in the process of checking the strips in Glacier Bay but haven't found a field like that so far.

I always find Skagway unforgiving - but I'm usually in an aircraft which cannot climb out for a missed approach. Two of the real do or die airports in the world is VNLK - Lukla in Nepal and LFLJ - Courchevel in France. both are on way only - landing on a shelf above a canyon with a high mountain wall at the other end of the runway.Lukla is so high that piston engined aircraft are not a good idea.Search airliners.net for some photos.

Although a bit dated now the Geo render airfileds are very well done. I love Geo Render 6 (Strom and Sultan) as well as Lake Wenatchee (W27) and SkyKomish. No where on the danger scale as Lukla and Corcheval but Sultan and Lake Wenatchee are grass strips surrounded by tower spruce trees and Mr Goldstein has done them quite well. They are also in one of the most amazing parts of the world.I too love Skagway. I find it tough too, I think thew dock is what the big distraction is.

Yes they are payware but fairly cheap and the scenery is for an small area and includes a couple strips each (and they are in close proximity so you can fly between them). Also, Fly Tampa's St.Barts is about as good as it gets too (Saba is even more white knuckle I think). Many have excellent screenies plastered on the SS forums. The trip from Julianna - St.Barts - Saba - Julianna is a great route too.

Hey, Michael, hope this is not too late:I liked Glacier Creek, Alaska so much I made it my FS9 splashscreen.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/174100.jpgStart at May Creek, Alaska, MYK and takeoff runway 31; climb to 5500' heading 010; find the gap and turn right to 040; in the gap, descend to 2800/80KIAS; find Glacier Creek strip (KGZ) in the righthand fork-of-the-why(Y); reduce speed with full-flap and get on the back of the power-curve and hold Stallspeed+5kts until touchdown. This is a default FS2004 strip. The mission failed if the runway is overrun.[/font size]

http://www.mountainflying.com/images/080_Indian.jpgIndian Creek (S81) is always fun, but Cabin Creek with a turn in the runway is even more challenging (I08) - www.mountainflying.com is a site for real world pilots but hilights many "must be trained by a local pilot" airstrips.Flying M (OR05) http://www.flying-m-ranch.com/flyingm/airport/ and Ranger Creek (21W) are also among my favorites. I also like flying into / out of Stehekin State from Chelan. Actually - pretty much any airport in the Washington State system is great - http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/aviation/Airports/default.htmAlso try any airport in Idaho with USFS in the name - search www.airnav.com airports for USFS.Forget the ATC - land in these by the required runways.

If you are looking through the Glacier Bay fields then try Snettisham in the outermost southeastern corner of the area.

Check out.. Aerosofts Lukla. and the freeware for VNKT (Nepal). So you can fly from VNKT to Lukla. This is one amazing airport and hard to land. It again depends on what aircraft you are flying too.http://www.fsvisions.nl/site/content/view/117/9/I even managed to land the CS C-130 here. After about 20 tries. :(I recently bought the LLH COURCHEVEL http://www.llhinfo.com/ But my FS9 version is giving me grief. I have some mesh thats bleeding through this add scenery and messing up the airport. But the FSX patch seesm to doing ok..so I am flying this in FSX only. And its a sloped runway too. Very nice.Manny

This is too much .... you get the cookie for the most ridiculous airfield of the day :+ The mountain flying link is great, especially the rules of thumbs page. Again, thank you.Michael.

Two great suggestions, Manny, especielly the LUKLA review (though in dutch, which is a tad too hard to decode for me), looks very impressive, and the scenery earned quite a few awards. We are taling about density altitude here,:7 right? I will add it to my wishlist.Thank you,

I know.. whats up with these french speaking people? They are in denial that English is the international language of business.Aerosoft could have done that too... you know..leave it German only.Oh well. You can use this http://babelfish.altavista.com/ and cut and paste the LLH webpage and it would translate the entire page into English (broken English) and as long as you remain in that window, you can browse their webpages all translated to English. It is a bit of a pain. I used paypal and I had to wait 24hrs before they sent me a download link. The same with the French Alps North. I want to get that scenery that compliments the LLH. But its all in French.Manny
