What a laugh...I had it ALWAYS on my desktop (been here for three years)....waiting...waiting to be merely, found. For the right combination of equipment to open up the door with 'Open Sesame!' Ali Baba would be most pleased.I'll share with you a secret---pass it on if you wish...If you have the right equipment...and it's all within any person's grasp using today's, last year's, even four year-old equipment, with a few modern perks added...you too can view the Holy Grail of flight simulation. What is that? One word. One satisfying world: REALISM!You say you want as 'Real As It Gets'? YOU GOT IT! It's here inside this forum waiting for a couple of twists on hardware...Just follow the Yellow Brick Road-------->:1. Any Pentium 4 or AMD platform greater than 3.0GHz or better, and/or a more modern platform beyond that Duo Core, etc.2. Any CURRENT mid to high end vid card using PCI-E or AGP3. A 16:10 wide-view monitor 24 diagonal inches or greater that can display **1920x1200** rez driven by a video card that can render 30 constant FPS or greater at this level of screen resolution.4. VOZ scenery from Down Under, or The Glacier fields of Alaska, both custom scenery. BEV as well, Ultimate Terrain...on and on...5. ASv6.5 (Active Sky --real world weather interface)6. One of the three great A.I. plane platforms (P.A.I. for instance) for injecting A.I.If you can cook with this recipe, then you will see exactly WHY I have so boldly stated (and I don't give a RIP about needing to put on a Flame Suit!!!) that I don't CARE about FSX struggling and limping along, STILL! I don't CARE any longer if FSXI comes into birth pangs. Fellow simmers....I/WE had the ULTIMATE sim right under our noses...but only had to wait for vid cards that could run high res at still substantial FPS levels, and wide screen human interfaces (monitors) running at the INCREDIBLE, clear, well-defined, tight, Drop Dead GORGEOUS...1920x1200, and EYE-POPPING resolution level.I just landed in Melbourne with my FS2004 visual and virtual world SO incredibly REAL...that I had the most satisfying, the most fulfilling simulated flight of my ENTIRE hobby life span of over 18 yearsThe just purchased ATI X1950 Pro 256 Meg video card, and the newly acquired Samsung SynMaster 245BW were the final links in the FS2004 chain. They were what was needed to yell 'Open Sesame' to FS2004!I viewed the Holy Grail tonight around the outskirts of VOZ's Melbourne. I have **total** flight simulation satisfaction back. No longer grudging and being upset because FSX didn't cut it. Not worrying the LEAST if ANY other M.S. flight simulation product EVER comes out. If if does come out and works, cool. If not, NO SWEAT!!! If you could have been in that virtual plane today...near about dusk, seeing what I saw out the cockpit windscreen...you wouldn't give a rip either, one way or the other.In a nutshell---FS2004 had MORE display potential then MOST of us have EVER seen of it to date. What a simply fantastic simulation platform this truly is...and you can experience what I did---with current equipment, and not a vapor promise of what might be...With the aforementioned equipment, that ANYBODY can own today, I saw levels of visual realism...that DEFYED me saying that it was in fact not the real world, the rolling hills, the sea...the shadows upon the mountains, the clouds billowing above my Cessna...all of it, my mind and eyes said---was: The Holy Grail---this was real! That scenery 'out there' is Melbourne....I have arrived at the end of the Yellow Brick Road. It took from 1990, until tonight to SEE and ENJOY what I had always so HOPED for, but only, always it seemed-- intended with and for, the next 'round' of technological improvement one or three years away...I'm now standing at the gates to the city of Oz. It was adding the 1950 Pro, and having it run a 24 inch 1920x1200 resolution display. I could stay with this forever. You have GOT TO VIEW FS2004 as it was always meant to be...at full-bore high resolution. 1920x1200 or higher equals 'real world'. It equals the SCOPE of what would be seen out of a real-world flight. It equals as good as it gets..NO...BETTER. Even better than that phrase.With all the FANTASTIC programs that are here...NOW for FS2004 that MAKE FS2004 in high rez TOTALLY real...not 'almost' believable, you only have to want it...and then make it happen for your platform, too!~Today, was the culmination of 18 years, hoping for this level of visual realism----and this week---today, this past hour,it finally---was fulfilled.Thank you Microsoft. Thank you Dell. Thank you ATI. Finally, thank you Samsung. All of you---made it happen in 2007. Flight simulation is new again! It's young again. Hi Paul,The bottom line would be if you could maintain pretty near 30 FPS with all sliders and features full bore, at your max resolution.If your system can do that--at 1650x1050---YOU'RE IN! 1920x1200 is premium and the ultimate view-scape though.About the FPS figure. If you can get an FPS figure that keeps you stutter free, then go by that, and not try to obtain a baseline. I'm not familiar with the 7600 GS, but I **CAN** say that there was an incredible difference shown by replacing my ATIX800XT part and putting in the ATIX1950 Pro part.The X800XT is a powerful card, but---three generations old. The ATI1950 Pro adds THAT MUCH MORE rendering quality, that I did not waste one cent in buying it.Also, I picked up MAJOR FPS performance after running with the CAT 7.1 driver suite. 60-70 FPS unlocked. I have FS9 locked to 31 FPS displayed at 1920x1200 and it never dips. With my X800XT, it would also obtain 30 FPS lock-down but would dip into the low 20's as the scene changed--then come back up to the 30 FPS figure.The 1950 Pro does no such thing.If you could slap in the Pent 3.4 CPU, that would not hurt (if price is reasonable).I also have 3 gigs of DDR2-533 MHz in my rig. Whether that makes a difference too, as compared to your specs, I don't know. I do know however that my FS9 performance is stunning!I am most pleased by what I have at present and have no further need to update for FS9. The Samsung 245BW was the item to take FS9 over the top!:)

Thanks. When you say you pick up MAJOR FPS after running with the CAT 7.1 driver suite - do you mean video drivers? and is that one specific to ATI?I'm using the latest nvidia drivers from June 2007 version 162.18Would it be possible to see or to get your FS9.CFG file?Thanks.

Paul, the Catalyst Drive Suite 7.1 is for ATI cards only.The 7.1's were the last FULL set for ONLY XP. Vista crept into the drivers after that.I'm running FS9 under XP Pro, and here is my FS9 config So...being that I can cap 30 FPS with my present hardware using the .cfg file I posted earlier, I figure why not? :)About losing 3 FPS in showing the FPS counter, no..I was not aware of that...and in thinking about it now...(you bring up a good point) and knowing that with this new card, I don't go BELOW 30 FPS under any circumstances----I probably should just turn the thing off, what?I have always shown it from the bad-old-days of the FPS flipping all over the place depending on the action on screen. This is over with.On my next flight---no FPS line. :) (My hand is shaking typing this)Oh, about planes, etc...no matter the weather or custom planes that I fly--general aviation and commercial, the FPS stay locked on 30.Perhaps you won't see a visual difference down to 24, and I'll take your word for it---but BEING that I do get rock solid 30---so will keep it there.Cheers!Mitch

All of the above.The X800XT did a good job, but didn't maintain a rock-solid 30 FPS no matter what you threw at it. It took some dips. The big Kahuna---was and is..the 1920x1200 24 inch Samsung. It brings everything-------------->home.Mitch

It took some dips. >I checked the ATI X800XT compared to ATI X1950PRO at 1920*1200 in FSX. The chart indicated 14.6 FPS for the 1950PRO and 10.9 FPS for the X800XT. At 1600*1200 the 1950PRO has 15 FPS and my current NVIDIA 6600GT has 9.3 FPS >The big Kahuna---was and is..the 1920x1200 24 inch Samsung. >It brings everything-------------->home.>so it seems that this resolution is to much for FSX.
