AI Landing Speed

Recommended Posts

I have a 747 model that comes in a little hot and need to know about reducing AI aircraft landing speed. I have an instruction about adjusting the speed at which plane rotates, which is lowering the "reference speeds". Will this also adjust the landing speed?Sometimes it overshoots the runway and has to go around because it's still too fast on final. Thanks for any help.

Hi,The variable that has the greatest effect on landing speed is the empty_weight line in the aicraft.cfg file. The other one is the wing_area, but not by very much. When I'm tweaking an AI aircraft, I usually start by setting the empty weight line first, getting the approach speed correct. Then edit the minimum throttle (i.e. reverse) and toe_brake scalar to get the landing roll correct. Then I change the reference speeds, engine thrust, and wing area to get the takeoff speed correct and looking good. Finally I alter the drag values in the flight tuning section to get the climb and cruise correct. I tend to ignore the descent speed. This is somewhat simplified, but should get you most of the way there.Hope this helps,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___

So I will assume from that, the heavier the empty weight, the slower the aircraft or do I have it backwards. The rest seems easy enough.

Hi,The opposite - higher weight = faster speed. Landings are not based on the flight dynamics (like the rest of the flight regime) - it's sort of "canned" with only a few things affecting it.Hope this helps,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___

Regardless of how the model is configured, the AI aircraft uses the settings in aircraft.cfg to control how fast the plane flies at cruise and take-off/landing. Of course if the flight model is ridiculously off, the plane will look funny trying to fly at these speeds. Note also that the AI will use this cruise speed when flying the direct GPS routes programmed for it. So, if the plane is not arriving then it should, this speed is set wrong:[Reference Speeds]// Knots True (KTAS)flaps_up_stall_speed=full_flaps_stall_speed=cruise_speed=-Pv-
