Scenery Layers

Recommended Posts

Hi, what is the reason with the layering of scenery in FS9? At the moment I have Ultimate Terrain at a non specific number and the rest of my sceneries are just randomly placed in the scenery config. Should I have Ultimate Terrain at a certain number or does all the scenery numbers and layers really don't matter? Thanks,Bill

Scenery layers only really matter when different scenrery items overlap each other. For example, some New York scenery would have no conflict with some London scenery so it doesn't matter what order they are in.It is important when they are in the same area though as basicaly, the one on top is the one you see. For example, if you have the UK wide UK2000 scenery installed, any extra addons in the UK would need to be above it to show. If they were under it then you'd still get the default UK2000 airports, citys, etc. With your Ultimate Terrain, any extra scenery that appears in the same area that it covers must be above to show.

Scenery area layer or priority is important primarily because of exclusions, both explicit and implicit. Exclusions aren't mandatory, but when they exist, they remove (or in some cases replace) all scenery of a certain class in all lower priority scenery areas. Some scenery is purely additive, in which case priority isn't much of an issue but in most instances the purpose of the addon is to render a geographic bound area with higher fidelity, so that poorly or incorrectly modeled scenery is removed and higher fidelity used in its place. That will only work when priority is observed, keeping in mind that all exclusions work only on certain classes or types of scenery, and any other scenery classes will not be affected, regardless of priority. Thus, an exclusion intended to remove 3d scenery objects has no impact on terrain mesh. Aside from that, the layering of the default scenery areas should not be played around with, unless an addon specifically says to do so. By default, "addon scenery" is installed as the highest scenery priority, and all other scenery added by the user typically are placed in layers above that one.scott s..
