FPS goes from 50 to 20 just sitting in plane

Recommended Posts

Hello,I have enjoyed and visited this site many times over the years and enjoy the wealth of information it has always provided. After searching the site, I was not able to find any info on this. I thought I had joined the forum years ago, but I guess I have'nt since I tried to sign in to post this and found I wasn't registered (shame on me) I load FS2004, and go to the default location (KSEA) in the cessna. Just sitting in the plane, I watch my fps go from 50 down to 20 over a period of about 2 minutes. At first, I thought it was AI causing this as they began to spawn, so I set the traffic slider down to 0, exited, and re-started the sim. Same thing happens every time. I have my sliders set to a middle setting running at 1024x768 32(same as my desktop)and no 3-d clouds. I have a P4 3.0, 512 memory, and a Geforce 6200(256mg) card without any programs running in the background. I use the Saitek X45 contoller and have the latest nvidia driver installed. I have defragged both drives. Operating system on drive c, programs on drive d. I will watch this thread and provide any other information you fellows might need in order to try and help me. Thanks alot in advance for your time.Jerry

Jerry- Two comments- Your 512 memory may be a little on the low side. FS9 seems to like a fair bit of RAM. My system started way back when, with .768GB - then later when I bumped it to 1.28 GB, FPS jumped about 20%. Beyond that, more recently I went up to 2 GB- no increase in FPS BUT at the low end, FPS didn't dip quite as low. The extra RAM seemed to put a better floor under FPS. Try invoking the Refresh Scenery command (see Controls/Assignments). It will restore a declining frame rate instantly- well, there is a 3-4 second pause. I have it mapped to the Pause/Break key and usually hit it prior to landing approach to ensure max FPS. FS9 seems under some conditions, to have a very slow loss in FPS. Finally, for the best performance check, go to Flights/Select a Flight/Choose a Category/Other/Default. This puts the Cessna at KSEA in one clean, consistently standard shot. I've found it the best mode to judge FPS.Alex ReidAMD XP2200 1.8, triple mons on GeForce FX5200 GPUs.

Hi Alex,Thank you very much for your response. I will upgrade the memory today. I wasn't aware of the refresh screen in the controller settings and will certainly use that. In trying to keep my first post short, I probably didn't explain very well that your way of entering the sim and going to KSEA is exactly the way I do it. I can not upgrade the CPU any higher on this board...so after increasing my memory, do you think a new video card would add an increase worth the cost? I don't need a whole lot more of increase in FPS but, and after making a few more tweaks, I'm now averaging 17-20 FPS. I would like to see that increase to around 25 or even 30 so I have smoother FPS around busier airports. I'll let you know what the memory upgrade does. Thanks again,Jerry

Jerry- The two settings that can cost me FPS are AI Traffic and Autogen. AI is set below 25% and Autogen is off. (Autogen produces some dumb things anyway, like trees, big stone houses alongside runways!) Most other FS9 settings are mid range.Like you, I could use some extra FPS to offset the demands of situations like KLAX at night. I'm no expert on the internal organs of a 'puter- a faster vid card might help- but I'd be inclined to study the results of more RAM first.I think my choice after more mem, would be to experiment with dumbing down some FS9 settings. A subtle change here and there can produce some good results. Ex.- Simple vs detailed clouds. Life is always full of compromises!HOWEVER- be aware that my system is older than yours- an AMD 1.8 with GeForceFX5200 video cards driving triple/180

Alex,The extra 512meg helped and I'm now getting a very steady 25 FPS (slider locked). I can live with this:) I have gotten back into the sim and decided to take things up a level by getting Level-D 767 and learning to do it a little more structure. Learning curve...but I'm getting there. You spoke of using three monitors with your system. I have a laptop running Win98, and you got me thinking about trying to use it with my main computer. I have a network and I just connected it and it's working. Its just a P100, but I think it should be of some use, even if I just use it to pull up chart while flying. I have read of some guys using another computer(s) to run flight controls, gps on a separate screens.Again, thanks for your input and it was nice meeting you and look forward to visiting from time to time.Jerry

Hi Jerry,My system is a 3.2 P4 and my GPU is a 256m ATI. I agree with the above, that you do need more ram but, understand that 20 FPS seems about right for SEA with no AI and limited autogen, considering your system. Complex aircraft will knock it down even more. FS9 is CPU limited more than GPU. I don't think you will see any appreciable improvement with a new GPU. I've tried every tweak in the book and have come to the conclusion that there is only so much you can do with older CPUs. Another important aspect to consider is that upgrading bits and pieces to the latest technology may not be the best idea for many reasons; power supply, motherboard compatibility, etc, etc. I finally just took the plunge and bought a new system so that everything works together right. I've got another week and a half to wait for that to arrive.Having said that, I'd be interested to see your FS9.cfg. I might be able to offer some suggestions to maximise performance for the system you have. I doubt I'll be able to get you to 50 FPS, in fact, I know I won't but, I may be able to offer some suggestions to improve the smoothness and flyability at the lower FPS rates. If you want to post your FS9.cfg here, I'd be happy to take a look.Best Regards,Jeff

Jerry- That's good news. I'm sure you'll enjoy the 767. Consider using your new 2nd mon for possibly the 767 Overhead panel and/or the CDU. These Popups can be undocked and dragged to the new mon- very handy! If you layer them so there is always an edge visible you can have both on this mon- and bring each to the top by merely clicking on its visible edge.Keep an eye on FPS when you do this- an open/layered popup-espec the OH can chew up FPS. If it does, close it and reopen it as needed on the 2nd mon via the main popup control. You may also be able to open a new view, set it to left or right fwd, then undock, drag and resize to the new mon. These comments of course apply to any plane.Finally- NEVER allow the edge of any panel/popup to overlap an adjacent monitor-even a wee bit> FPS killer.See the pic for some ideas re "spare monitors"!Alex ReidPilatus PC12 at CYYJ terminal (CYYJ/2007 scenery)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/184891.jpg

oy Alex,That looks GREAT! What software do you use for this, as with the P100 limit on my laptop, I don't think it would work if I had to have the software run fs on it. Your thoughts...Jerry

No extra software! Is your 2nd (laptop) monitor showing up as part of your desktop in Control Panel/Display/Settings? If so, just undock a popup or view and drag to #2 monitor ! SIMPLE. I'm only displaying a pop up (or view) on the 2nd mon- FS runs solely on the main CPU.Have a look at Control panel- I'm not sure how a networked PC shows up in Display/Settings.Alex Reid

First, thanks to you guys for helping me tweak things. I have attached a picture at KSEA in the Level-D 767 with traffic set at 20%, and the FPS locked at 50. I will lock it at 40, and this should continue to give me a good balance at any airport. The new 512mg memory, for a total of 1 gig, and reinstalling drivers, seemed to really makes things very stable.Again, my thanks to you!Jerry

Hi Hoooper, I posted some changes but, just removed them having seen your screen shot. I'm not sure my changes would help you as I posted them so I will revisit this in the next day or so. I can't work on it right now as I am late for an engagement.Regards,Jeff
