New Way to Store Sound Files

Recommended Posts

Maybe others have been doing this for years but I just stumbled onto it. You know how you end up aliasing all the twin engine sound files to the Baron 58 (or anyway most of them)? That's fine but it means THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME! Here's a trick that can be combined with a very slight amount of editing to make every aircraft have an individual sound.Put all the Baron 58 .wav files into the main sound folder for FS9 instead of just in the Baron's sound folder. To do this, just copy the whole Baron sound folder into the top level of FS9 so it finds the sound folder of FS9 and dumps all the contents into it. Then go through and find the sound.cfg file that fell in there and cut and paste it back into a new sound folder for the Baron that is empty except for the sound.cfg file. Now you can put just the sound.cfg file into all the sound folders of other twin engine aircraft. Now the Baron sound.cfg file can be changed as shown below to get a better prop sound that changes frequency with RPM:[COMBUSTION.2.08]filename=propflags=0viewpoint=1panning=5000rparams=0.000,0.800,1.0000,3.000vparams=0.000,24.000,0.999,24.000,1.0,0.0,1.0,0.0,1.0,0.0,1.0,0.0,1.0,0.0,1.0,0.0link=Combustion.1.09[COMBUSTION.2.09]filename=propflags=0viewpoint=2rparams=0.000,0.800,1.0000,3.000vparams=0.000,70.000,0.999,70.000,1.0,0.0,1.0,0.0,1.0,0.0,1.0,0.0,1.0,0.0,1.0,0.0Make similar additions for COMBUSTION.1.08 and 1.09 on the left side though the panning line for the left engine is "panning=-5000" to put the sound on the left. I have put similar panning lines in all the engine and prop sound sections but that's not a big deal.In the "vparams=" line you'll find some 24.0 values. These are the volume levels of the internal prop sounds. For other aircraft you can increase or decrease these values to get differences unique to each aircraft. There is a wind section that also has a voume that can be changed for individual aircraft. You can even use different wind wav files. All wind wav files and the prop.wav file used here reside already in the FS sound folder. So this is something different and makes simming a little more interesting. For your next project, you can make a sound.cfg for some 285 or 300 hp singles by using only the left engine sections from the Baron sound.cfg file. They all use the Baron .wav files so you can do the same thing to make individual sounds for those aircraft.Does this slow the sim down? No, only the time it takes to load an aircraft from three blinks to four blibks of an eye.Do aliases still work? Yes. You don't have to change them all at once.
