Ultimate Defrag Yes or No?

Recommended Posts

I just downloaded the Ultimate Defrag trial version but haven't installed it yet.I searched but couldn't find very much current information regarding the effectiveness of this de-fragmentation program.Does anyone have any experiences with it, positive or negative?I received an e-Mail from PC Aviator regarding a special sale they're running on it.I'm currently using Perfect Disk 2008. Would Ultimate Defrag be substantially better? Thanks.

Hi,Perfect Disk 2008 and Ultimate Defrag.Well I use the two (on different hard disks) and I have positive with the two of them.So I think you can stay happily running Perfect Disk.BTW .. my personnal opinion is that too much peoples are waiting miracles from defragmentation :)Cheers.

I Have used Ultimate DeFrag for over a year and no problems. I believe that all these programs use the same Windows defrag process. So that is not an issue. They add a fancy interface but not worth money. The other thing they do is to rearrange files based upon certain criteria. That may be most recently accessed go the to outer tracks which have a faster transfer rate. Or, specific files go there. Or some other criteria. In my view a disk jumping about looking for fragments to assemble a whole file is the worst culprit. Next is access time to move the head, so neatly arranged files help. Finally transfer time and files on the outer rings, if they are somewhat large, will benefit.I would guess that a real world comparison between the various programs would show little difference.Regards,Dick BoleyA PC, an LCD, speakers, CH yoke

Hi,When you know the speed of the actual hard disks for write and read informations .. I think .. the spread of those infos on the disk have no such big influence about the time to read them.... I will on the contrary tell it's absolutely negligeable ... and I don't see here in anyways a real gain of speed ... after a defragmentation. As noted before ... I think peoples are waiting miracles from defragmentation ... but those miracles are myths .The only thing those defragmentation tools offer are better GUI and for some a greater speed process for defragmenting ...depending of the process method you ask. Some also offer to defrag the master boot record sector or the virtual memory sector .. and again all the benefits of those defrags are myths... when you know how Windows manage those things.A good word for qualify all those benefits is "placebo effect" :)Cheers.

I have to agree, defrags dont seem to increase my speed at all, So i dont bother too much with it anymore, Ill defrag maybe once every couple months, and I have no problems running msfs or any other app, including my windows.P.S I guess I should state that I only use windoews defrag as I see no need to pay for something that may make a minuscule improvment(On my system anyways) when i have free access to the one that came with windows.

It still hadn't finished by the next morning and eventually i ended the session and restarted my comp and detected no increase in performance either for everyday use or indeed for FS use.Whilst its probably not a good idea to go for months and months without defragging and optimising clearing out junk files etc i do begin to wonder about doing it every few days(which i do at the moment).I personally have never noticed any performance increase weather defragging, tweaking or didgery dodgering etc AT ALL.PS I-obit does do whatever it does very nicely though.:-) pps I think us simmers are particularly prone to the placebo effect .Andy

I defrag on the average of twice a month - FS performance gains (if any) are probably measured in milli-seconds.My understanding is that the main purpose of defragging is to reduce wear and tear on the moving "head" of the hard drive - theoretically prologing it's life.If that is true, then I am all for doing anything which protects my investment.

I have Ultimate Defrag and personally I love it. I really like the graphical interface that's shaped like a disk which shows where it's placing your files while it's defragging. It does help speed up texture load times with FS when you defrag by selecting the 'high performance' and the 'by file name' options.Kim

I have both. Same comment as everyone else. Dont see much difference in either. I might say that if a user has never defragged a 3yr old install of windows, then a defrag might show some results. But the sim user is usually a bit more aware of his computer and takes better care of it. IMHO.If you want one, get the cheaper so you can see those pretty user interfaces.
