Best Glider?

Recommended Posts

Guest oyvindhansen

I want to get into glider flying, so could anyone please recommend a good freeware glider for fs2k2? It should have a nice VC, preferably a GMAX of FSDS2 model and great flight characteristics.- Oyvind

G'day I was going to ask a question as to why there are almost no questions re glider flying in this forum -- when yours popped up.Last night, I was feeling a bit tired and jaded - felt like having a quiet fly around and I opened up one of the glider flights included in FS2002s' FS2000 flights . I instantly realised I had NO CLUE at all as to how to fly these things!!!!!!! I tried to land it at an airport I could see but without a throttle , I had no chance . And quickly shut the Sim down! :)So - can you point out any online glider tutorials to me ?Is the Fsim environment in any way realistic to real life glider flying? Thanks Barry

Hugo,to get rid of those messages add the following lines to the fs2002.cfg file:&l;OLDMODULES&r;SOARRec.dll=1FSSound.dll=1Cheers,Max.

Hi,Take a look at the "Soar" pages at http://virtualsoaring.org/goto.htmlIt's a site dedicated to virtual soaring.Gliding in FS is a whole new ballgame and can be a lot of fun, especially for those who are tiring of airliners!Firstly, the default glider sux in a big way. Grab a couple of the addon aircraft mentioned in this thread. To get lift, you can add turbulence in your weather settings which is sufficient to stay up. Better still, download some thermal scenery from the Soar page or get Thermiek from here http://www.fszwever.com/ and make your own (it's very simple to use).Regarding takeoffs, the easiest (but most unrealistic) way is to simply slew up to about 1200' AGL, then look for one of your Thermiek thermals to gain altitude. When you hit a thermal, bring your speed back to near stall and circle to stay in the thermal. The rule with gliders is to fly slow in lift, fast in sink.Another takeoff option is to be "towed" online (Join a multiplayer gliding game & ask someone how to do this). I'd recommend Lago's superb "Emma Field" scenery which includes a working winch and aerotow.Landing is simple enough provided that you dont leave it too late! Enter downwind at 1000' AGL, turn base at about 500' and short final at 300'. Dont be concerned too much about threshold - if you're too low, turn base as soon as there's sufficient room to land.So where can you fly? The default scenery has thermals in SanFrancisco, near the bridge. Theres also ridge lift (turbulence) near Innsbruk in Switzerland. Addon thermal scenery allows one to fly in hundreds of locations. There's one on this site from Fred Platt (I think) which allows one to fly a glider from Lake Tahoe to Las Vegas! That's a cool flight!Good luck & happy landings.LonelyplanetXO

Hi,nice to see glider pilots on this forum :-DMe and my friends are using VATSIM to fly toghether , and race each other on the task :-outta it's very fun and you can really forget about lack of good thermals in Fs2002 when your "opponent" is 5 km ahead :-lol you can chcek some shots from out flights here :http://www.enter.net.pl/www/ericson/szyb1.jpghttp://www.enter.net.pl/www/ericson/szyb2.jpghttp://www.enter.net.pl/www/ericson/szyb3.jpghttp://www.enter.net.pl/www/ericson/szyb5.jpghttp://www.enter.net.pl/www/ericson/szyb9.jpgand something extra ;-) do you know how gravity take off looks like ? here you have one shot - you just pushing the glider from the hill ! the simplest way to get into the air ;-)))http://www.enter.net.pl/www/ericson/gravitytakeoff.jpgregardsEricson
