DX9.0a General flame bait, I mean warning and...

Just some food for thought...1.DX9.0a will hopefully fix some minor problems that some still had with multiplayer games (but wasn't the original DX9 release going to fix those? :-roll )or MSN Messenger + a few other "minor" bugs. Here is a list of known updated files included in DX9.0a:Old dates, new file versions:d3d9.dll: 5.03.0000.0901 English Final Retail 12/12/2002 00:14:32 1613312 bytesdpnhpast.dll: 5.03.0000.0901 English Final Retail 12/12/2002 00:14:32 32768 bytesdpnhupnp.dll: 5.03.0000.0901 English Final Retail 12/12/2002 00:14:32 68096 bytesNew dates, old file versions..???bdaplgin.ax: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:26 16896 bytesbdasup.sys: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:26 11392 bytesmsdvbnp.ax: 6.05.0001.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:26 52224 bytespsisdecd.dll: 6.05.0001.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:28 354816 bytespsisrndr.ax: 6.05.0001.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:28 30208 bytesipsink.ax: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:26 14848 bytesmpeg2data.ax: 6.05.0001.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:26 57856 bytesndisip.sys: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:28 10112 bytesmpe.sys: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:26 15104 bytesstreamip.sys: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:28 14976 bytesmsvidctl.dll: 6.05.0001.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:28 1230336 bytesslip.sys: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:28 10880 bytesnabtsfec.sys: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:28 83968 bytesccdecode.sys: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:26 16384 bytesvbisurf.ax: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:30 27648 bytesmsyuv.dll: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:28 16896 byteskstvtune.ax: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:32 274432 bytesksxbar.ax: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:26 39424 byteskswdmcap.ax: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:32 226304 byteswstcodec.sys: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:32 18688 byteswstdecod.dll: 5.03.0000.0900 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:16:32 47104 bytesmsdv.sys: 5.01.2600.0000 English Final Retail 2/17/2003 09:21:50 52096 bytes2.Some are having problems with this new release along the lines of AGP aperture sizes needing to be changed in the BIOS to be functional again, so if you run into this just try lowering it untill you have success.3.Do not look for, Hope for or wish for "graphic performance increases" in FS2k2 Know matter what DX9 hardware or drivers you may or may not have, it just isn't/won't be there.None of the sims "here" will benefit from DX9 except for the multiplayer issues that a few may have and for those that do by all means you may want to try the update. And with that fact in mind I wish someone on the ball would remove that verbiage from the Avsim front page DX9.0a news brief as it only entices many folks to unnecessarily complicate there lives..I mean systems, unless they are experiencing one of the aforementioned problems and or are trying to run a DX9 demo.4.If it ain't broke, don

LOL. I think someone heard you Paul. The link referenced by the AVSIM "notice" is now dead and there is no mention of 9.0a on the DirectX page. I, too, wish that whomever from AVSIM thinks that anyone will get a performance boost from a new DX release woulld find something else to write about. I agree that little "pearls" like that one cause far more harm than good. Keep up the eagle-eye approach to this stuff.Trip

Thanks for the info altough (and this is the flamebait part ;) ) you didn't consider that this release is more or less ment for the nextgen GFX cards due out soon. Also, forget the hype about date's and fileversions. If you don't mind, but I can set the workstation clock to the prehistoric era and still release the newest versions of my software. Perhaps a careless developer who doesn't mind "living" in December 20, 1913.True, the current user's won't benefit that much, but do they really have to? DX9.0 is quite fast and it doesn't really matter wheter you have 49 or 50 FPS, does it? New DX doesn't always means performance increase, there are also system limitations you know. Sometimes a new version is just released because it's more stable than the previous one. Think about it... I hope that this explains the missing bits and pieces sofar.

I suspect there are lots of us like myself who read your posts with great interest. Thanks for the heads up and thanks for taking the time to post your always well considered and thought provoking ideas. I've been down to the driver change fork in the road SO MANY times. Now that I've found my way back from the wilderness, I'm staying put. I'm quite happy with 20+ FPS and switching to 2D when the sim slows down in congested areas. What I need is a 5 GHz pentium 4!Larry

I went ahead and got it because I was hoping it would fix the popping sounds I sometimes get with FS2k2. It did fix it .I have no slow down in performance at all. I would only do a directx update from 8.1 to 9 if you are having a "problem" with something that may not be fixed with a driver update. This was the case for me. I work with computers all day long so I feel comfortable in my decision making and know how to get out of most problems that may occur. I do not suggest any directx upgrades if you are not willing to take this risk that comes with it even though that risk is slim.Like I said I did it to hopefully correct some sound problems and it did work . This for me was not about performance or graphics increase. If you get directx with hopes of increased graphic quality and a big FPS boost you will always be disappointed because directx is not what makes FPS happen . "I would only do a directx update from 8.1 to 9 if you are having a "problem" with something that may not be fixed with a driver update."See, the thing is, for many people, low FPS, blurries, etc., is considered a problem...lol, and of course not the result of the VooDoo card or the Pentium II that they are using. I think there is a lot of misinterepretation of what DX aactually is/does, and is capable of screwing up. Just my opinion...

Well said, cerwinvega.I haven't met a DX version yet that fixes low FPS, blurries, etc. But some folks just have to give it a try.

In general, I agree with the reticence expressed here regarding DX upgrades. We need to keep in mind, however, that unless we are sticking with FS2002, we are all going to have to upgrade to DX9 quite soon, assuming Microsoft are true to their timetable for the release of FS9 (and I am sure they will be). I for one would rather know upfront that my system ran happily with DX9 before I plonk out my money on the next version of FS. It's nearly April now, so the next release of FS could be only 3 and a bit months away. It is likely 9.0a will still be the current version by then unless Microsoft choose to do what they did with CFS3 and produce a "special" edition. That said, I'm hoping FS9 will work with the original DX9 release. I've been running the original retail DX9 release since it came out and haven't suffered any problems whatsoever. So I'd be reluctant to perform a "dual" upgrade of both DX 9 and FS in one hit.

All very true, except as is very common and well known grabbing the latest Drivers or updates to your OS when they are brand spanking new is never ever a wise thing to recommend to the public, good way to potentially flood the forums with "I need help" post.Case in point: Yesterday MS pulled the DX90.a update and today after repackaging it reposted (file date 3/26/03)it for download as there where some problems though somewhat limited. But I understand where you are coming from, we no doubt all will be running the latest DX9.x.x version when FS9 hits the shelves, but until that time it might be easier/better to let MS get it as straightened out as they can, MS have already stated that DX9 will be around much longer than any other version as there is plenty "under the hood" so you can expect a few more revisions.Take Care,Paul
