Problematic Shorelines in FSX

Recommended Posts

Hi Christian,May I add my congratulations to those of others for what you have been able to achieve with this latest version (Beta 7 Mar 21) of TileProxy. It is a truly remarkable product and, for me, this release is, once again , opening up wide new vistas of enjoyment in both FS9 and FSX. A huge thank you from me! :)I have a fairly slow broadband connection but, having carefully read the manual and Ed Truthan's very helpful contributions, I have configured everything quite successfully. As long as I remain patient, build up the cache and fly nothing faster than a Cessna 172 the visual results are quite staggering around my home area south of Edinburgh. I have encountered one problem, however, in FSX and that's to do with the shorelines and water in the Firth of Forth. Oddly enough FS9 doesn't exhibit this issue and overall the sea and shorelines do appear very realistic. Not so in FSX, which is a bit of a let down as the ground textures are otherwise terrific. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187230.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187231.jpgIs there any way I can improve matters? Thanks.Mike

Hi MikeI have been getting something similar ( though not quite as bad) while flying around the Solent. What Service provider are you using? - and what settings in your iNI file?Barry

Hi,Actually, I may have jumped the gun a bit here :(This is what I am seeing in FS9:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187242.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187243.jpgOn further consideration, I think the focus should be more on the unsightly blocks in the water of the Firth of Forth in FSX and not so much on the shoreline itself. The appearance of the latter is, I think, merely due to the absence of photographic data between the triangles jutting out offshore. The 3D objects are from Iain Gallagher's superlative Scotflight, although why they are displaying is another puzzle as all the TileProxy entries have priority over everything else in the scenery library. Not complaining, mind you, as Iain's placement is spot on at Edinburgh (EGPH) and the airport blends in very well indeed with the TileProxy imagery. :)Mike

Hi MIkeYour INI file is identical to mine - Service Provider 1 and an altered Level remapping. That remapping is possibly a bit ambitious if you only have a slow Internet connection - but I have tried both that mapping and default mapping with the same result. I think that possibly the problem lies with the Service provider. I seem to get inconsistent results with TP - the "quality" of the textures obviously vary with the place in the world - but , I have been trying out southern UK ( as I will be visiting shortly) and I seem to not get as good a view/resolution out the cockpit window ( and the worse is directly under the a/c) than what I can see in the browser looking at Service provider 1's maps. Ie lower res textures in the Sim that in the browser . It doesn't seem to matter if I hit PAUSE and let the download catch up, I have to actually reset/reload the sim scenery (which reloads it) to catch up.BTW - I think that the only scenery that gets eliminated by TP is autogen - that is why you can see the addon scenery in TPBarry

Mike I am now convinced that the problem lies with the Service Provider - because here are 2 shots -- one with the problem in the Solent area and another without the problem at Brighton - both taken on the same flight.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187272.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187273.jpgThat Marina at Brighton looks like it would be worth a trip from London to Brighton - just to see the marina!! I will be in London in 3 weeks time - and being an "old" yachtie, I like this kind of thing. That would have to be the biggest marina I have seen anywhereBarry

That's what happens when the white tiles start close to the shore, which is the case at this location (visit the place with their web frontend to see what I mean). To create a nice transition, TP needs a good deal of photo water to work with. You might want to try reducing the blend_distance in order to make the transition sharper, which should make the artifacts less noticable.
