A Corridor Leg Challenge

Recommended Posts

This is the leg that Sim - Outhouse had such bad luck with in 2006 that allowed FLgihtsim.com to win and AVSIM to come in a close second. All three teams were heading across the same corridor at about the same time. I recall Sim-Outhouse being in the lead when both the Baton Carrier and the Wingman failed to land on the short strip. Due to their misfortune, Sim-Outhouse had to refly that 1674nm leg again. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to fly the middle leg of this Atlantic Ocean corridor from Bermuda International to Flores and successfully land your jet on a very small patch of asphalt. Do you have the decision making ability to go around if you are landing too long? There not much between the end of the runway and the cliff down to the ocean. RWY 18/36 is 4593 ft. long. Slight Correction Buzz

This is the leg that Sim - Outhouse had such bad luck with in 2007 that allowed AVSIM to take the victory. All three teams were heading across the same corridor at about the same time. I recall Sim-Outhouse being in the lead when both the Baton Carrier and the Wingman failed to land on the short strip. Due to their misfortune, Sim-Outhouse had to refly that 1674nm leg again.
AVSIM came in a very close second. We arrived first but Flightsim had more bonus hours and edged us out.

I managed to make it down safe. I came very close to overrunning the end of the runway - screenshots laterThe computer paused at Top of descent because I dozed off for a bit. Not sure how long.

LPFL Takeoff PracticeBefore I picked up the baton I did a quick takeoff test in daylight to check the performance of a lightly loaded 744. Pictures from my first takeoff attempt below.VR just past midfield, climbing at 170 in pic 4. It's a rocketship when light.

I just had another go at TXKF - LPFL, during the day this time so that visibility would be ideal. Approaching LPFL the wind was blowing from the south indicating an approach to Rwy 18, and it was all going very smoothly until I got down to just before the threshold when it appeared that a bunch of trees were blocking my ability to follow the glide slope. The 747 was very light on approach so that my approach speed was as little as 130 kts, but even at this speed there was simply no length in the runway to manoeuvre over the trees and then nose down sharply again back onto the glide slope. I gave it my best shot but again I crashed. While the trees remain in place Rwy 18 will be impossible to approach in a 747. This is one leg I won't be trying again! Mike.
