FSX - To install acceleration or not

Recommended Posts

Well, I replaced the system that died last week, my new system specs are:Vista 64Intel Quad Q82008 Gigs RamGeForce 120 with 1 Gig RamI guess I will get straight to the point, I had no problems on reinstalling FS-X on the new rig. However, I haven't installed FS-X acceleration this time around. Should I, if so why? One thing I noticed on my first go around with FS-X acceleration installed, buildings would seem to vanish while I flew. A great example of this was Casino row in South Lake Tahoe. I've caught bits and pieces of members saying they regretted install of FS-X Acceleration--but why? Thanks and Regards,John

Just my $.02, but I hunted down FSXA as soon as it came out (getting Best Buy to match sold-out Circuit City's price), came home and installed it and have never looked back since. I thankfully admit to never having been one of those with continual problems, much less any real problem that couldn't be overcome.I now have a nice F-18a to burn fuel at an extremely high rate, my Edwards AFB up in the Mojave Desert is beautiful, when sanity escapes me I fire up the EH-101 helicopter and try to find a cushy place to bounce off of, er, I mean land. I haven't checked out Longleat or Berlin, but Reno-Stead looks pretty nice. Not bad for a $20 investment. But there are / will be others who will rail about how FSXA trashed their systems, blah, blah. Again, I guess I've just been lucky.

John -you are way above my system-but for all the improvements on accel I can't think of a reason not to install.A little bit perhaps like old wives tales on pan heaters, lop, and all that other stuff.

People seem to think that acceleration is some kind of fsx killer. Except for adding carriers and a few extra planes to fsx plus a few extra functions, it doesnt actually do anyting. If you are going to install SP2 than you may as well install acceration as it is usually sp 2 that causes the issues, and besides most models coming out need sp2 anyway and you also get to enjoy the art of carrierr landings, which im still working on.

Well, not quite.Depending on how you use FSX, you may or may not want to install Acceleration. The reason is that Acceleration requires SP2, and SP2 limits you in some ways. For example, some add-on aircraft don't work well in SP2. If you are a collector of add-on aircraft, SP2 (and thus, Acceleration) may not be for you. Also, if you are a big fan of internet-based flight, you should consider whether SP2 is for you or not. SP2 and SP1 do not co-exist in multiplayer. If you have SP2, you will only see other people in multiplayer who also have SP2. This means that, if most of your flying buddies use SP1, you may not want SP2.On the other hand, if you enjoy the challenge of trying to land on Aircraft Carriers, then you simply must have Acceleration (and thus, you must install SP2). If you are into airplane racing, Acceleration is must-have as it gives you several Red Bull tracks and the Reno Air Racing location. If you fly helicopters, at all, Acceleration is must-have, especially if you want to learn hoisting and lifting skills. There are also several enhanced scenery areas (such as a completely new Edwards Air Force Base).Acceleration significantly extends the capabilities of FSX, but it's not compatible with SP1, and the thing to remember is that SP1 isn't compatible with SP2 in a lot of ways that could impact your experience, depending on how you as an individual use the simulator.

This post is incorrect in that Acceleration already "contains" or is equivalent to sp2 plus it has some additional features like additional aircraft and carrier op features. It does not "require" sp2 in that sense but it does, however, require sp1 to have already been installed. On the other hand, this poster is correct in that Acceleration adds its own requirements relative to displayed textures.Stan V.

Thanks all so far for your replies. I have SP1 installed, I haven't seen the issue with vanishing buildings (such as I saw originally at South Lake Tahoe). If I do install Acceleration, can it be backed out if the issue happens again? I'm pretty pleased so far with my flights, with Tileproxy the sim has been running very well.Regards,John

Well, I tried to install acceleration, and now the previous issue with vanishing buildings has surfaced--to duplicate, just fly out of South Lake Tahoe towards casino row. I am going to try to back out the install, and see if that fixes the issue. I'd rather miss the features acceleration offers than lose scenery as I am flying.Regards,JohnEdit: Luckily backing out FS Acceleration worked. If anyone can duplicate the issue and/or knows of a fix for it I'll give Acceleration another shot. Outside of that I am happy to have FS-X up and running again. I tend to find the Baron and King Air my favorite all around aircraft in the package.

I read somewhere that the standalone Sp2 is not exactly the same as the Sp2 from Acceleration.Level_D say also on their site that their prefered installation for the 767 is FSX+Sp1+Sp2, with Acceleration installed there are problems with the systems of the 767.Guy

I tried installing just SP-2, as soon as I did, the problems with buildings popping in and out of view started again. I chose South Lake Tahoe for testing the issue as it always happens there. Fortunately SP-2 has the option to uninstall, soon as I did, the problem was again gone.I wonder if anyone has ever seen this before or at least can replicate it? I wish I could keep SP-2 installed given potential aircraft compatibility issues, but it takes a bit too much from the realism when I am on final and buildings disappear and reappear :(Regard,John

There where a few things changed in sp2, did you run fsx before installng sp2, its also worthwhile making a backup of the old fsx.cfg and then deleting it and letting fsx buld a new one. Andd fsx doesnt run well straight out of the box, you will need to do a few weaks to optimise it. There are plenty of stickied guides around the traps to help you through , just need to sit down and see which ones work on your system.

I've run FS-X at each step--clean install, service pack 1, service pack 2 etc. But a subsequent google this afternoon found other people complaining of the same issue after installing SP-2. Performance isn't an issue, just the odd artifacts of the buildings that pop in and out of existence after the SP-2 install. I have applied most of the tweaks available but did not need to do much to get the results I wanted.Regards,John

Autogen is handled differently in SP2. As best I understand, autogen objects get batched for better performance. This makes the appearance and disappearance more noticeable to the eye.Is this ideal, no. It would be better to do a fade-in and fade-out. FSXI maybe..But this is the way FSX/SP2 or Accelation runs and most of us have learned to live with it.:-)

Actually it's not the Autogen that is doing this--even with Autogen set at zero, buildings when approached will be there one minute, gone the next, and appear again. If anyone could try the flight out of Tahoe Valley, just fly east towards the lakeside casinos and it's probably best to do so with Autogen off. I've seen this just about everywhere, hangers will appear and disappear at airports, bridges will vanish, and so forth. And on two different systems, with two different CPU's, Chipsets and GPU's. For me this behavior is a show stopper for SP-2, especially when on final. Fortunately the sim looks great even in its SP1 incarnation, and I won't be buying any add-on aircraft for some time while I pay off the new system :)

You probably don't want to hear this, but it may have something to do with your system. On both my old (and ancient) system, and the brand new one I'm still setting up, both with SP2 installed, I do not see what you are describing. I do see what Bert describes though.Non-Autogen buildings and structures are always there.Autogen buildings and structures, once they appear, do not disappear and reappear.Perhaps there is something about your video cards and/or drivers that might be causing this?Regards,...jim
