ATS Operation During Manual or Single CH Landing

Recommended Posts

99% of my landings are manual hand-flown, unless visibility is too low and I need to let the AP handle it. I just completed a flight into an airport with poor ILS offerings and was forced to a visual landing (KLCK). If I want to use ATS for manual landings or single channel ILS ops, what should I be doing? Turning off ATS and controlling the throttle myself from 2500 feet or so? Does leaving ATS on for manual landings work? I know I can, but is it designed to be done that way? Also, how do I arm a single channel ILS versus autoland? EDIT: Okay, I see it says Autothrottle may be used for ALL landings, so I assume it does idle with AP off in manual landings.EDIT2: Sounds like an Autoland will occur unless certain conditions aren't met (landing gear, ILS tuned, A/T on, ect...), then it reverts to Single or another mode (APP only, F/D). If Dual then it's auto to T/D and Rollout, otherwise AP disconnect must be done at CAT II minimums. Right?

Chris, I believe you answered your own questions correctly. If autoland mode is not dual or single (APPR ONLY): - ATS will automatically retard to idle if landing flaps are set (> 31.5). ATS will not disengage at touch down. It will disengage once you apply reverse thrust. If you don't apply reverse thrust you must disengage it manually otherwise it will be stuck in "retard" mode. - AP will automatically disengage at 100 ft AGL (if NAV is engaged it will disengage at 400 AGL).
