744 nose gear behavior on takeoff?

Recommended Posts

In a normally balanced takeoff, would you expect to see the nose wheel strut extend progressively as the aircraft moves into the high speed phase of the takeoff roll or would the gear remain in place without any significant vertical movement until liftoff? I think my observation (in Fs9) is that the strut remains as-is and that after liftoff, it extends gently just before you pull the gear up in a positive climb. Just curious about this item.Jonathan

The MSFS oleo strut simulation is simplified, and add-on developers are restricted to using it.In real life, you don't want an airplane that lifts off the nose wheel before you are ready to rotate. True, rudder effectiveness generally takes over above some value like 40-60 kts but the steering is still important.

The reason I asked is because in the new CLS 747-200, they have modelled moving nose-gear struts that are a direct function of takeoff trim. It's very interesting to observe the effect during the takeoff roll. If stab trim is set correctly, the nosewheel strut extends progressively up to Vr but keeps the gear on the ground until liftoff when unstick occurs instantly with rotation. If there is insufficient + trim, the nosewheel requires more visible heaving to get airborne. It's a small detail but very eye-catching on the CLS visual model.Jonathan
