An Old Dog got SMOOTHER flight & FPS Increase

Recommended Posts

Guest Kingfish_42

So it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks. This morning I was in the Avsim MSFSX forum and ran across the followinghttp://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=241713 posted by John CiI found the topic interesting and decided I might try it out. Then a few minutes later I ran across the followinghttp://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/Ya...?num=1232926583 posted by jwenhamSo first I tried the affinity mask process, and in a period of about 5 minutes had tried four cores, then three, then two cores on my Quad 6600 (@3.2ghz)Surprise, surprise, three cores ran several fps faster than my normal setup with 4 cores; but much more importantly, ran MUCH smoother. KLGA at 10:00 am, clear skies, some AI, autogen at 2 (normal) and it was smooth at 20fps.Being a great believer in what Nick N has to say, I fell for the second thread above. Bump up the autogen to Very Dense (4), and it ran smoother still. Not any faster, but SMOOTHER.The foregoing took about ten minutes in total and completely changed the flight experience for me.Background: soloed on 16th birthday, over 50 years ago. Programming in COBOL and FORTRAN 46 years ago. So I am an old dog and probably not a dumb dog. I have been following Nick's advice on computer and sim setup for a number of years. The system set up can be found at http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/Ya...?num=1208959973and FSX setup athttp://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041If you have not been using these guides, at least look at them and see if your system and program configurations are close. If you are weak in any areas, follow Nick's advice. So prior to trying the above two items, ie affinity mask and INCREASING autogen to get smoother flight, I had closely followed Nick's recommendations and had a sim that I was proud of. Scenery was clear, flight was smooth, and I had the benefit of the sim experience that Aces had programmed. After the above two tweaks, I am now flying FTX at 1000 feet, full weather from REX and ASA, four feet of screen width using 3Head2Go and IRTracker/clip.I'm not a heavy poster here, or anywhere. I just read and learn. But I have noticed the lack of attention paid to the first two posts mentioned above and feel that they are worth an additional shout. Try them. You may like them. Kingfish :(
