jumping into FSX

Recommended Posts

:( Hi guys, I'm about to do a system overhaul and jump into FSXMy question is....... Is Fsgenesis mesh still a must have or has the default mesh improved over FS9?Does the flytampa scenery still work in FSX?is there much change to the AI setups or to the AFCAD and Voicepack mods we love from FS9?What else will still work fromFS9?ThanksStan

The only thing that should work from FS9 is your mouse... no just kidding, but not by too much. Most things don't make the transition from FS9 to FSX all that well, but a fair number will with some tweaks and patching. If you have specific products in mind, it's best to check at their websites for more info. The AI setup is different in FSX than it is from FS9. It's not really compatible. There are some work-arounds depending on what it is you expect to do. AFCAD and EditVoicepack are pretty much out of date, but again, there are workable alternatives. The good news is that a fair bit of the real estate on the FSX disks is devoted to higher-resolution terrain data. Depending on where you like to fly, you may see some dramatic changes over FS9. In particular, North America gets a lot of love. Acceleration boosts up a few areas even more - Mt. St. Helens is a geographical wonder in FSX Acceleration. Chances are good that if you stick with FSX, you won't find very many terrain glitches. FS9 had some terrible terrain data in the remote parts of the world (gigantic FS9 hole in China, I am talking about you!), and FSX greatly improves on that. However, even FSX relies on old or incorrect elevation data, and that coupled with the restriction that all airports must be flat, will cause problems with add-on terrain mesh which uses up-to-date elevations. Particularly with add-ons, you will find airports on plateaus and in trenches. FSGenesis puts out a very good product. They have good support. If you want the top-end elevation data, then you can't go wrong with FSGenesis. If some airports in trenches and on plateaus will bother you, then you might want to stick with FSX.
