Locking Framerates Kills Performance

Recommended Posts

Hi guys - I have a question for ya'll...I went through Nick's guide and have been able to get FSX running amazingly well compared to previously. That is, with the frame rate slider set to Unlimited, which isnt a problem, except for the fact that I like to fly often with TileProxy, with which I set the frames down to anywhere below 20 to allow the scenery loading to keep up with me. At Unlimited with an average of 30 FPS, the TileProxy scenery simply doesn't want to load/keep up with me. Now, this wouldn't be an issue if setting anything other than Unlimted absolutely kills the performance. It doesn't matter if I set the limit to 50 or to 10, my frames are almost always approximately 5-9 FPS. Now, if I PAUSE the sim, and refer to the FPS counter, the frames settle on the limit or as fast as I would normally get frames in the Unlimited setting.Anyone know what causes this?

I'm not sure why the hit is so bad on your end. I too see a hit when selecting locked, but I only use locked in rural areas. Locking normally chops off 5-7 FPS

You're getting hit worse than me, but locking the FPS also drops my performance big time ... generally 50% or more. I'm finding that the textures stay crisp for me at unlimited, but I do wish I could lock it to resolve the little bit of stutter I get now and then because of the wildly fluctuating frame rate.

No idea what causes it but I also get a 20-25% framerate hit when locked.

Go figure. on my old rig, I get better performance with them locked at 30. With unlimited I get micro stutters and about a 20% decrease in FPS. Wonder if it has anything to do with older vs newer rigs.

That may be true setting the frame rate to Unlimited but it also could cause stuttering. That's why many recommend bringing the frame rate slider down to around 30 FPS as it results in smoother simming. Personally I see little difference in performance or quality with unlimited or frames locked at 30. As hardware gets better and no new FS Simulator the FPS counter will probably become obsolete and more and more will learn how to take off and land an airliner... :( Jim

I like to fly in major cities and airports a LOT, and when I'm in an intense area such as JFK or Heathrow, I find UNlocking the FPS to be VERY useful. However, when flying in rural areas where not much rendering is required, my frame rates jump all over the place, meaning it's better with the FPS locked. But when that happens I lose 6-12 FPS.

That seems to be the way to best use this control. It seems Unlimited engages some advanced priorizing to improve frame rates but in the process allows the video card to run sort of out of sync with teh game such that a certain jerkiness can result which appears to come from processing frames fast in one instance and slower in another. Locking frames steadies that part out but costs on overall processing efficiency.

Jimmy--I have the solution you are looking for. Read my post in the FSX forum from yesterday. Enjoy! It works!Noel
