ATC Probs, I think

Recommended Posts

HelloI have an ATC problem?? (I think). I took off IFR from Toronto RWY 33R for Boston Mass. Flight plan said first leg to turn to 105 degrees But ATC says 155 degrees and if I follow ATC instruction later they tell me to head to 200 plus degrees which will head me roughly to Chicago lol. So its not the flight plan but ATC that's incorrect. Can anyone help me solve the problem please?PS: This pro occurs on the NY JFK, & Ottawa and all points East of Toronto.

I understand that this happens immediately after takeoff. In the first example you're giving, ATC is vectoring you around towards your eastbound route. When you intersect the route that you filed on your flightplan, ATC will give the clearance "resume own navigation," which means you'll be following your filed route from then until you get near the destination, at which point it will start vectoring you around again, towards the runway in use. if it's happening as described this way, then it's the usual way that the FS ATC works (as far as I know, it will not clear you to fly a published SID, but I might be wrong on this). What I've described above is the "normal" way it works. If it keeps vectoring you away from the route that you filed in your flight plan, then it's malfunctioning. That also happens sometimes, unfortunately, and it can be very annoying, but I've never experienced it on the scale you described. Bill

tinhead,I assume this is default ATC? If so, I'd strongly suggest purchasing Radar Contact 4 if you can afford it, the best money I've ever spent in FS. I've been using it for a while now and the ATC never goofed up in providing vectors or in any other way, version 5 should be even better.

FS9 ATC leaves a lot to be desired. Not to poach the thread but, I was departing PANC once in the Lear45. My first waypoint was the Anchorage VOR which was right behind me on take-off.On climb-out ATC directed me to turn to the VOR without giving me the "resume own navigation". The radius of my turn caused me to miss the VOR by a bunch but anytime I tried to turn to it I got yelled at to turn back to my initial heading. I let it go for a while just to see what would happen and every time I tried to turn back to the VOR, same result.I was half way to Siberia before I reset the flight and the same thing happened again. Ain't it fun. We have a lousy ATC engine, but at least we can still use planes that are several generations old.[/rant]

I recall having this issue when I started flying FS2002 and flying IFR. Same applies for FS2004, however, It never happens anymore. The trick that I found works is to always ensure your first waypoint/navaid in your IFR plan is several NM's away from your departure point. For example, if your departure airport has a VOR located at, often the flight planner uses that VOR as the first waypoint. Delete it, and go with the second waypoint / navaid.I tell you,, one of these days,,, I'm gonna fly-by and buzz the boys in the tower.

The trick I use not to get into this situation, is to follow my tip above. However, to get out of that situation do thisFollow ATC's heading assignment even though it's wrong. Fly until they hand you off, but don't contact the next ATC center. Now turn to intercept the correct flight plan and fly it until you intercept it. Then contact ATC and they should figure it out..RJ

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------That's what happens to me too! It seems to me that after installing Edit Voice Pack another installer for TTSTechnologies always popped up and I always let it install. Even though I have no idea what it does for me. But the last time I re-installed Edit Voice Pack that didn't happen and lo and behold the problem I know have. I think I might just bite the bullet and follow the advice given and purchase Radar Contact. "THANKS ONE AND ALL FOR YOUR HELP" :( .........John

I just want to endorse the solution proposed by 3Green.If your flight plan has the first waypoint within about 30 nm of the departure airport, you should delete it. I found that advice on a forum within the past year and it works every time. No more taking off and chasing my tail around in the local area. Whether the distance should be 30 nm or less may be debatable, but give it a try.Regards,JerryH

Waypoints and headings are manageable with techniques mentioned above. What really kills me is the altitude instructions, I hate it when I'm told to contact a new center just before the altitude change on climb :(

I also agree with 3Green. What I find, is that if there is a SID and I add that, the waypoints often "make sense" from the runway and ATC gets me right on my route. I haven't found the need to go 30nm out.scott s..
