Spelling?

Recommended Posts

I was under the impression that spelling on these forums was to be upgraded. Funny to see the notice this morning that there was a problem with access to the files library and that a ' technicion' was working on it when it should be a 'technician' who was sent in to fix the problem. Just glad to be of help.Jim D.

Well, okay ... on the AVSIM home page, left frame - "Suppport BRAVO 369" seems to have an extra P. I recall finding typos on websites I ran - six months later. Don't know what was worse, making them, or wondering why no-one noticed. :(

My favourite (or favorite) comes from the advert for a Tech Manager for Avsim. According to the blurb, "If you are imminently qualified" you should apply.I would have thought it would be better to have someone who was eminently qualified, rather than someone who may be about to qualify, but there you go.And the person who does the daily item about the library is never sure whether it's Todays files or Today's files, so they hedge their bets and alternate between the two. I sometimes wonder whether Avsim is trying to emulate the UK "Guardian" newspaper, which became so famous for its typos and mis-spellings, that everyone called it the "Gruadian". Being a left-wing paper, the right-wing pointed to it as evidence that socialists and liberals couldn't even spell. But it didn't harm circulation; it was a case of there being no such thing as bad publicity.

Jim, You messed up on your color change code there it seems, and darn the luck, right when you were pointing out a typo by another person... not to worry, it's not your day job, and I'm sure you had to hurry in order to have time to do it and still run your real life, everyone understands. :(

Wasn't it also known as 'The Gruniaad' or am I just getting too old & stupid?

:(Well, I figured he'd come back and say he realized that Avsim isn't run by a staff of full time Pros and that he understands we do the best we can with the amount of time we have to do it in.... and now and then anyone's fingers can slip on the keyboard and mistakes happen....... something like that.

Well, that plan fell on its butt. :( Nice try though. :(

Well, I felt a bit guilty with my post. Now I feel like a complete swine! :( As I hinted, having run websites on a voluntary basis, I'm not sure which is worse - finding your own typos a year later and wondering why nobody noticed or cared - or having someone else spot them! Nah, I don't really feel like a swine. I look on it as riding shotgun :( to help preserve a great site's image.

Our image has been trashed for years. We don't need no help in that quarter. :(

You're not sure? I am. It's bad finding my own typos, but it's really really bad having them pointed out to me. What's even worse than that is a prolonged discussion between the typo maker and the typo finder, because there has to be a certain amount of the climbing upon of high horses. And the absolute peak of the worst is when I get involved personally on my high horse, because it's inevitable that I will make the same mistake that was being complained about in the first plaice. "In the first what???????????"I realize that we all make some errrors in spelling. But some, not necessarily this one nor the original one, but some of the most obvious that should not occur. Examples; "your" instead of "you're" ( as in "you're right" ["you are right"]) or "there" when it should be "their" (as in "their friends"). Of course it could be "your' " (possessive: your' airplane).Just shows how diffilcult the English language is. Remember the rule: "I" before "E" except after "C" or in words like "neighbor" and "weigh" (or "theirs").I confess that I at times do consult the dictionary when I'm (I am) not sure. And as far as the color code in my first post, at least there (not their) were no spelling errors.Jim D.

Now, now! Not so, there may be debate but this has to be either THE site, or else THE site's worst nightmare!
...the first plaice.
I understood what he meant. It's an allegory, "the first plaice" is literally "the original first fish with two beady eyes on one side" and is a poetic way of saying "in the first place". :( Things could be worse. The day a site like this is written entirely in txt or l33t is the day I say kthxbai, toss away my joystick and lock myself in the grumpy old soul's home! :(

You do make a good point. Being the contrary SOB that I am, I vote for the latter! :(

It is biblical... give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Give a man a fish and a loaf of bread and he eats for two days. Give a man a spelling error and he lives forever! As for TXT... we tried that. Couldn't do URL's to save our lives. But, the uniformity of the presentation was a wonder to behold. EDIT: and all my Java experiments would not work to save my butt. Ergo, HTML, SHTML, PHP and all this other stuff, spelling errors, warts and all.
