Texture Problem fs9 with i7940 + GTX 285

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,I'm experiencing blurry textures in FS2004, I see blurries further a away whereas the immediate area around the aircraft is fine. I know there have been so many posts on this and I've searched them all and nothing has helped me. I'm also running a more powerful system than the users that have previously posted about blurry textures so previous posts have not helped. My system specs are as follows (to be honest I never thought I'd ever have problems with blurry textures when I got my new system! :( )Intel Core i7 (940) 2.93GHz Processor L3 Cache 8192KB Asus P6T DELUXE/OC PALM Corsair CMPSU-750TXUK - Corsair TX 750W Power SupplyVista Home 64bitNVIDIA GeForce ASUS ENGTX GTX285 TOP- Video Memory: 1GB GDDR3- Engine Clock: 670MHz- Memory Clock: 2600MHz (1300MHz DDR3)- Memory Interface: 512-bit- RAMDACs: 400MHz- Max. Many thanks in advance. My fs9.cfg is as follows any tweaks to this that anyone can help me with is much Just tried them, it does not appear to have made much difference, it just seems as though there's like a boundary line where the sim is just not loading the textures quick enough? or just not loading the textures beyond this 'boundary' up sharp enough.

Sorry to break it to ya, but thats as good as it gets! I have learned to except that after years of tweaking. Only thing I can suggest is..bind refresh scenery to a button...and try to refresh inflight at some point...if the refresh takes longer than 2 or 3 seconds, then youre computer is not keeping up loading the textures at 60fps (must bring down the fps lock) Also, after that refresh, pause and take a look where the blurry textures are...thats as good as it gets. :(

Well I'm truly shocked! I'll try bringing the FPS lock down, I previously had it locked at 30 fps, but tried increasing it to see if it makes a difference. The funny thing is, I always seem to remember certain users with lower end systems, but still managing to pull out great screenshots (unedited) from their sims, with sharp textures that stretch beyond what I'm seeing on my system! Surely there must be benefits of using FS2004 when having an i7940, 6gb of RAM and a GTX 285 which is factory overlocked!? Don't get me wrong my frames are just phenomenal, I'm hittng 30-40 fps with full traffic PMDG 744. Level D 767 at heavy airports like Aerosoft Frankfurt! My aircraft textures also look perfect, so sharp and realistic, it's just the not so distant scenery textures that are a let down...

I hear you man, but you have to remember when fs9 was programmed. dual core, let alone i7940, was not taken into consideration. So there is a limit on how hardware will help you. I have a e8500 at 3.4 with a 512 8800gts and 2 gigs of mem and am getting almost identical fps in those situations, so it doesnt get much better beyond that. Also, be very careful when looking at screenshots! thats the first thing I learned. Screenshots, when taken properly, will ALWAYS look better than what you're actually seeing in game.besides that, i use similar settings to egbert but have texture_bandwith_mult set to 100 with texturemaxload at 10 (ive heard thats the best setting). also, I have fps locked at 35, that made a difference when I brought it down from 60 when flying low and fast in complex airplanes.

A good reason to turn down FPS setting is that FS9 will start to degrade graphics if FPS drops below 70% of the target. So if you lock your frames at 60, and your PC can't keep them above 42 then FS will compromise graphics quality to attempt to match the FPS lock.Hope this helpsJoe

Another thing I would try is running a different resolution in-game for FS2004. You are pushing a very nice resolution, but perhaps try 1680 X 1050 and see if there is any difference in the texture appearance. I kind of agree with the other poster above who noted that FS2004 was designed before all the multi-core, extreme resolution luxuries we have today. It seems that a real pimpin' system like yours can even run FS2004 only so well. Your system would probably benefit FSX greater than FS2004 since you have the hardware for it and since FSX has higher resolutions and will use more than one processor core. Also bump up your TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT= to 400. I think that is a common one that simmers use and I have had very good results with it in 1680 X 1050 on my C2D E6420 + ATI 4870 512. Good luck!Scott

Thanks a lot for your input guys, maybe I'm expecting too much in terms of the distant(ish) textures not being so crisp, maybe it's just a fs2004 limitation as put by the posts above, however what my main concern is that my sim don't appear to always be even at a reasonable' standard as one would expect with a 'reasonable' system as opposed to a pimped one. For instance the noticeable amount of blurring fairly close to where I'm flying. This is something I need to iron out, I will try the settings some of you have mentioned above. I would also be interested in asking others with a smilar set up to mine, so seeing what other i7 users with nvidia gtx series graphics cards have under their fs9.cfg and also nhancer settings, as there is very little advice about settings in fs2004 for these 'faily newer' processors and graphics cards...If anyone knows of any particular users I could ask with similar set ups please let me know...Thanks again.

I haven't flown FS9 for over a year now but I do believe it is a different animal than FSX. I used to get blurry scenery all the time with FS9, especially with photoscenery. I didn't have a core i7 at the time but even with a 3.6GHz Q6600 and DDR2 1066 nothing helped.Between FSX and FS9, and I don't know much about this but I'll venture a (not very detailed) hypothesis:FSX is capable of providing clear scenery with the right HW. FS9...if the scenery complexity or addon detail is high enough...cannot do this like FSX NO MATTER WHAT THE HW. I think it's a limitation of FS9. How the texture loading is handled or something like that.It was never made to handle scenery like FSX. I wish I knew more about it. At any rate I ditched FS9 over a year ago because I liked FSX so much more, even with the struggle to get it to run well.-jk

Thanks for all the help guys, I guess I raised me expectation a tad high, its been a while after all since I've been on fs9!! Guess I'll just have to except it for what it is and try and enjoy the nice fps!

HiJust a clue :I experienced the same issue one year ago when I replaced my 8800 GTS 320 Mo (1st generation) with a 8800 GT 512 (same MB, same hard disk...)No matter what I did (edit the fs9.cfg, change the drivers...), these blurries never gone... until I recently upgraded to an ATi 4870. I now have crisp textures back, from below the aircraft to the horizon :( So, at least in my case, the blurry textures were definitely GPU-related.If you can, try an ATI card and give us your feedback.EDIT : oh, and as soon as I am back home, I can post unedited screenshots of what I get now that I have an ATI card).
