Email from Microsoft

I just received an email from support@microsoft.com. The subject was "My application" and the message said simply all information was in the attachment. I haven't sent for anything from MS. This is a virus, right? My virus scanner didn't give me an alert, but don't want to open the attachment.Thanks,Todd

Yes, it is a virus. I received it a few days ago but fortunately deleted it. It is some kind of worm that is going around.

Yeah i too have gotten this under sustained "attack" --> i.e. Multiple messages all with different subject lines and or attachments.Thus so far Norton Antivirus has picked up:1) W32.HLLW.Mankx@mm2) W.32.KlezH3) W.32.Sobig.A4) W.32.HybrisA Further 5 items are/were also quarrantined by Zone Alarm. All of the above were sent to me within the last 3 days & all emails were at the very least duplicated.Other Address' that should immediately be blocked:ktc1@cox.netbig@boss.comhahaha@sexyfun.netqjeur3t3w@yahoo.comgiannoulis@olympusnet.grAll of the above address had virii attached & all appear to be the work of virus bots as per the support@microsoft.com emails.The most persistant offender of the above list is big@boss.com, everyone that i know of that has had an email from this address gets it regularly.The way that i control these address' is:1) If using Outlook XP, 2000, 95 etc (or even outlook express if it has a rules wizzard), OPEN the Rules wizzard.2) One by one add these address' to be immediately & permanently deleted upon reciept. Make sure the rules remain "turned on".By using the rules wizzard in Outlook & having both Norton AV and Zone Alarm (or similar firewall software/hardware) you should be able to effectively block these types of emails - the one bad thing is that Virri "programmers" are pretty well one step ahead of the Anti virus software updates.

Also in Outlook, have all preview or autoopen features turned off.I use an e-mail prescanner that gives the sender, subject, and message size. The messages mentioned here were asbout 200K in size giving a clue they contained executable code. Not recommended unless it is a file attachment you requested.If you wish to examine an attachment, save it without opening and executing in a safe area where you can prescan it with a-v software. Never just click on a link to it because that may open and execute the infected attachment.

Is there a way to block addresses in Netscape Mail? I would like to know because to prevent these kind of emails as well as emails that I get from Viagra, Zanax etc. There just a bunch of ***** taking space on my computer. Please let me know.Thanks,

Hey Kurt, no program is perfect! My ISP has a good spam protecter as well as the ability for me to block any email or domain...I still got this message from MS....twice! (along with a buttload of spam that does get stopped). I use an online server for my emails, no outlook again, to many chances of d/l a virus. I run 2 firewalls and an updated verison of Norton, better safe than sorry.funny thing, my spam detector got the email, but the anti virus didn't! here's the deal: Microsoft will NEVER send you anything as an email attachment.They'll send you at most a link to a page on THEIR OWN SITE where you can find information and a download link.
