July 23, 200916 yr Hello everyone, long time no see. I am starting my PhD in Mechanical/Aerospace Eng and I would like to do my thesis in Computational Fluid Dynamics applied to flight simulation modeling.I need to figure out what the state of the art in flight modeling is. It is easy to find information about desktop flight models, but I can't find anything on commercial, military or research sims. Can anyone point me in the right direction?Thank you!
July 23, 200916 yr We still do not have a good real time 3D Volumetric Clouds to go through with the planes. That Holly Grail of a Flight Sims. Attached to it is the weather of course for maximum realism. The Big Wall still. Afterwards, the Terrain real time rendering that can give you Google Earth details without killing the PC bandwidth or keep you depended on the web. Good luck with the PhD, :( MAB

July 23, 200916 yr Try getting in touch with Embry-Riddle -- the commercial flight training university. They should be able to direct you.I went to ERAU, I don't think they have any flight simulation programming research.
July 23, 200916 yr I went to ERAU, I don't think they have any flight simulation programming research.I agree -- they probably don't have any flight simulation programming research. That's why I said they should be able to "direct" him, as in "direct him to people who know about this issue." He wants to understand the state of the art, who is more likely to know who's doing the work than these leading aviation academics?

July 24, 200916 yr You might try to get ahold of Flight Safety. They do a lot of training for airlines, and run the flight simulators for Boeing in Seattle.Just a Thought.John
July 24, 200916 yr Obviously the Canadian CAE is one of the largest flight simulation companies. But don't expect to find a whole lot of info on the web - these are very large expensive systems, not geared for some Joe Enthusiast. You may also try FRASCA International. Michael J.
July 24, 200916 yr Correct me if I'm wrong. Contacting someone in development with X-Plane or it's engine/aircraft may be of some use? ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
