would I see a gain if I upgrade from IDE to SATA?

Hello,I'm running a really old box,AMD3800+,GF6600,1 GB ram and a 20 and 80 GB hdd.Would I see a better performance in FS9 if I upgraded to 2 SATA II disks of 750GB each? They would be WD Caviar 750GB SATA 32MB .cheersJP.

Not sure about the SATA, but you can get Athlon 64 4000+ (which is probably the max for your mb) for 43.00 and I'd suggest 1 more GB ram for a total of 2 GB if you want a quick boost for not a lot of cash. Are the current ide drives 7200 rpm?

no,they are very old 5400rpm WD's.Both soldier on from about 2003 so they've given their money's worth, anyhow.I have since ordered 2x WD 750GB 32MB SATA disks,as I'm really short onspace now,I simply ran out of room, and I think those'll do fine on this board

You will see decreased application and texture loading times, but your frame-rate will not increase. Your 1GB of RAM is simply inadequate for serious flight simming, IMHO. RAM is dirt cheap nowadays too, no reason not to upgrade. Even old DDR isn't that bad. Looks like only a little over $30 buys you two 512MB PC3200 sticks on Newegg.

What's your Mobo?I've had a pretty tough time finding socket 939 CPUs that are worth the trouble. I was looking at a Opteron 180 (for 199) but it is also 2.4GHz but dual core. I decided against it because I'm thinking that I won't see much improvement and I plan on building a shiny FSX rig in a couple months.I do agree additional RAM is the best way to add a little life to your system; a new video card could help as well but you should do them both together. You could have a little upgrade for less than $200.

The Mobo is an MSI K8T NEO2 V2.0 .Yeah, about the RAM I figured as much, yet in the 1 or so years I'm flying thisconfig it sorta works. As I said,I have two 512mb modulesin the 2 available RAM slots,so It'll stay that way for now.Good news is I know what to look for when upgrading, though :)cheersTom.

PC application performance is dependent upon the speed with which one's PC can execute the application's requested instructions. Hard drive size and speed has absolutely zero impact on this. If you upgrade your hard drives with the desired effect of increasing your FS9 performance, you will be disappointed.

I figured as much, but asking doesn't hurt :)I'll be getting twin 1TB drives now,as the 750GB ones weren't in stock. They are not to speed up the PC but afford me some more room tostore my photo's and business stuff, that's the one and only reason for ordering.thanks for sonfirming what I thought, though, and that goes to all of you, really, thanks for thinking with me :DcheersJP.
