Trying to Upgrade FS9 to FS9.1

Recommended Posts

This might be a little crude but I can't see why it won't work. Note: this is for XP, Vista might differ1) Rename your existing FS9 folder and FS9.exe to FS9_old. If you launch FS from a shortcut you will need to make a new one.2) Next time you run FS it will generate a new .cfg labeled FS9_old.cfg, delete it and rename your FS9.cfg to FS9_old.cfg. This will be the FS you fly during this process. Note : addons that require registry entries might not work correctly during this process, you will have to live with it for a couple days.3) Install FS9 again, giving you a virgin clean install of FS9. Leave this install alone while you...4) Wait a couple days.5) Install the FS9.1 update to the virgin FS9.6) Search the virgin FS9 folder for all files modified in the last 24 hours. You will have to input the dates.7) Copy those modified files to the FS9_old install. Keep a watch for editable files like scenery.cfg etc., you may need to examine what changed and simply edit your old file(s) instead of replacing them.8) Relax and enjoy a cold beverage, you've earned it.9) Optional: delete the virgin FS9 install and, if you want, back-trace the re-naming process for FS9_old. Or not and keep both FS installs. Sometimes having a clean install for testing purposes is a plus.Anyone see any issues with this?regards,Joe

gwillmot--What OS is this install on?If it's Vista, and FS9 is installed to a \Program Files directory, then Big Brother (Vista) will move the executable and other files (i.e. .ini, .dll etc) to a Virtual Store directory (\UserName\Documents\AppData\Local\VirtualStore), and it's likely the older FS9.1 update program won't be able to find the executable in the "virtualized" location. Moral of the story...NEVER install application software in a \Program Files directory in Vista. That directory gets special treatment in Vista, regardless of Admin priveleges and other settings. Also, the \Program Files problem occurs on drives other than the OS boot drive as well. The fix, if this is your problem, is as simple as installing FS9 to something like F:\FS9 instead of C:\Program Files\FS9. The update should then be able to find the fs9.exe file where the registry says it is.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

If I remember correctly - and I'm trying to go back a year or so, and I'm OLD, so..................The update file I downloaded had to be executed from the FS9 folder. I think I tried executing from the desktop and got that error. Please don't hold me to this.Hope it helps.Lou

I believe you're correct, and I did place it in my FS9 main directory before executing. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful.gwillmot

A while ago I made the mistake of trying to install FS9.1 upgrade from outside the folder ( I forgot the golden rule, read the installation info first). An second attempt to install the upgrade in the folder failed. Thanks to info from Virtuali on the Dreamteam forum and a friend I solved the problem. On my friend's PC I installed the FS9 then the upgrade. I copied the modified module folder to my PC.Now I have the upgrade working fine. I had to do something else which I cannot remember. My advice ask Virtuali on Dream team, he has helped a few people with this same problem.

Hello,

On my friend's PC I installed the FS9 then the upgrade. I copied the modified module folder to my PC.
It's not only the module folder to be copied (see the modified files by the patch {the backup folder created by the patch installation} in one of my post above )http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtop...t&p=1645897Regards.bye.gifGus.

I chedked the FSDreamteam forum and all Virtuali recommnds is to copy the original .dlls and fs9.exe from the original CDs to the flightsim folder and run the updater from there.I just did that and yet still get the same error code.I wish I had a full list of what had to be original from the FS9 CDs. I'm afraid that this is no "easy" task after running fs9.0 for so many years with multitudes of addons and modifications. Color me blue.gwillmot

Gwillmot, I notice you typed ;"C:\Games\FS2004." . Please, someone correct me if I've missed something here, but I have been under the impression that the FS9.1 patch required: C:Program files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9 as the path and that the patch is real fussy about some installed addons ( scenery and aircraft ). BTW the patch is worth the effort once it is done. So for my 2 cents worth of advice I would humbly suggest uninstalling and manually deleting everything in the Flight Simulator 9 folder and documents and setting\your user name\my documents\Flight Simulator Files and then documents and setting\your user name\Application data\Microsoft\ and delete the FS9 folder if remains (requires you switch hidden files and folders off). Then find and run a freeware registry cleaner ie TweakNow RegCleaner. Then fresh install FS9 and run the update patch as per the readme. then reinstall all of your addons.Good luck no matter what you decide and best regards,Mel

I have decided to retain the status quo and not undertake major, time-consuming tasks which would probably result in a stroke, heart attack, and/or severe woozies.gwllmot
