October 14, 200916 yr The code that's established Flight Simulator up to this point including the name itself is the property of Microsoft. A whole new build of FS would have to be in order and unless I missed something this reforming doesn't sound like it's for the sole purposes of continuing the Flight Simulator franchise. This team may opt to go in a totally new direction especially seeing their efforts need to bring them the best bang for their buck. Is FS really that kind of money maker? According to Mathijs Kok of Aerosoft fame it never was. Flight Simulator was a nitch project for Microsoft that managers over the years were fond of so they kept it around. A whole new team trying to build a reputation and stay afloat in the gaming market might opt first for money maker titles the vein of the Half Life genera (or other areas like role playing) before going for something that is more nostalgia versus stone cold cash. If you look at FSX this team was moving the sim ever closer to the gaming public (which failed I might add) so to say they'll build a new sim much less build a sim we want is a long shot. We'd be better served supporting Aerosoft's efforts... With all things we'll have to wait and see but I'm not holding my breath on a startup team who's main goal is to make a huge impact on the gaming market and in turn get picked up by a larger development house. Especially with a quote like this..."The beauty of starting a new studio is that we get to reconsider all our preconceived notions," comments Selby, a former Lead Product Designer at Microsoft. "Our previous efforts focused on building traditional simulation titles. However, now we get to redefine what a simulation game can be.

October 14, 200916 yr Yeah, I mean...wouldn't it really be news if someone would get the internals of FS9 "Public Domained" or something? Maybe Microsoft would be interested in doing that since they don't appear to be interested in FS9 anymore. Now that would be real effective dreaming :)Mark

Even with FS9 (as good as it is!), the sim is fundamentally crippled by being tied to the ancient BGL engine. Fr. October 14, 200916 yr N4, it sounds as if you been to the fountain and seen the source...is it as bad as the movie was? Sometimes engines can be refined...changed, made better, faster, stronger. But if the secrets are always secrets, then how can more of the best and the brightest of us have a go at it? Just a thought...Mark

Something is better than nothing. If their not going to give us FSX and are anal to a point of not doing anything more with the code than letting it collect dust then why not share FS9? Anal is too light of a word for this kind of reasoning. October 14, 200916 yr Maybe they'll release the code for XP at the same time. Has MS ever released program code to the public domain?
