MD-11 OOM - which course of action to take?

Featured Replies

I think there are a few misconceptions being stated here. With respect to memory management, RAM and so on, as well as the OOM error, I strongly suggest you read this post by n4gix here:http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=65741This explains the basics well, as well as the reason for OOMs...I would only wish to add a small point. It would be a very good idea to duplicate the line in the boot.ini and then edit only one of the entries with the /3Gb /userva=NNNN and change its display name (in between the ""). This automatically enables a menu at boot for you to choose whether you wish to boot the 3Gb switch or not, thus giving you a "way out" should your OS not like the switch...Andrew

Just an update (c'mon, I know you're all DYING to know what happened :( ), I tried this same flight on Win 7 x64 last night and she was as smooth as glass from start to finish. 1.4GB commit charge at KJFK. If anyone is holding out, if you go over to a 64 bit system you won't look back. And Win 7 is purty darn good from what I've seen so far (bear in mind I didn't start using XP until 2005!). Stoked with my FS9 performance on the new PC, and because I bought smart it only cost me around A$600 total. Woopee!Cheers, Chris D

Roman,They're not wrong about 32-bit Windows causing the OOMs. What's at issue here is not virtual memory as you say, it's something called User Address Space. 32-bit Windows has a 2GB limit (which can be raised somewhat with a boot tweak) on User Address Space, 64-bit Windows for all intents and purposes has no limit on it. Virtual memory is swapping to the pagefile on the hard disk when you run out of physical RAM, it is not the same thing as User Address Space and it's not what causes FS OOM errors.
