questions about the 747

hii had a couple of questions about the real 747-400, just out of curiosity-where is the TO/GA button?-how do you apply brakes?(not parking brake)thanks!

Hi, You need to sign your real name around here. The TO/GA Switch is located on the Thrust levers (at the front)You apply manual brakes by pushing on the brake pedals like any other aircraft, Left pedal left brakes, right pedal, right brakes.RegardsRob

You apply manual brakes by pushing on the brake pedals like any other aircraft, Left pedal left brakes, right pedal, right brakes.
The pedals have a dual purpose... Rudder and braking control. The pedals move in/out for rudder control, but pivot at the bottom for brake control (That is, for braking, push the tops of the pedals).In the real world, you can't park the brake by simply pulling up the Park Brake Lever on the control stand. You have to push the tops of both the pedals as far down as they will go, pull up the Park Brake Lever, then let the pedals go. The pedals are quite firm, so you need to make sure that your seat is adjusted and locked in place before you attempt to park the brakes.The TOGA switches are mounted on the #2 and #3 Thrust levers. They are hidden in most photographs (painted brown to make them even harder to see). The Autothrottle Disconnect switches are more visible and are mounted on the #1 and #4 thrust levers. Cheers.Q>

ok, for braking you push the rudder pedals with your feetbut the autothrottle, you said there are switches to engage and disengage the autothrottle on the throttles, two per functionis it the same thing to use rather one of the two? Are the left ones for the pilot and the right ones for the FO? And are they on the main thrust levers or on the reverse thrust levers?Finally, isn't there a switch to disengage the autothrottle also on the Mode Control Panel? Why duplicate them?Please don't mind the so many questions, i'm a newbieGiulio Dondi from Italy

Hi!Auto Throttle and disconnect of Auto Throttle are placed on the MCP. TO/GA switches are placed on the Flight Stick and on the pics you see below.

As suggested above, the switches on the 1 & 4 throttles are only "disengage" switches. The A/T switch on the MCP is an ARMing and disARMing switch. Subtely different. You can only engage the A/T by pushing other switches (SPD, TO/GA, etc). Only one button needs to be pressed at a time (one disengage or one TOGA switch). However, don't be worried if you push two by accident. The switches are wired to stop a simultaneous push of two buttons being registered as a double push (A double push of, say, the GA switch may result in extra thrust).Cheers.Q>
