Flaps maneuver speeds

Recommended Posts

I'm still a little unsure about the flaps markers on the speed tape. What I understand so far: As long as a specific value is green, it's safe to use that setting. During acceleration, the markers are a guide when to retract flaps. So, they're more an indication for maximum speed for a given flaps setting.Where I'm in doubt is during the deceleration phase. Since the flaps markers don't indicate maneuver speeds, I wonder how I can determine those when hand flying. From what I see in other planes, maneuver speeds are well above Vs or Vmin, so they look as if they provide a speed safety margin. How do I proceed in case I'm completely hand flying the bird without any FMS speed guidance and without rules like "on downwind, always be at x kts and flaps 15"? Is there some chart or formula to derive the maneuver speeds?Maybe I'm completely wrong...Andreas

Even if handflying, I always use the FMS for speed guidance. Why not use it?

You can't do it totally without the FMS, because the speeds you use will depend on weight- which you will get from the FMS. Checking the APP Ref page will give you the speeds the FMS will use for your predicted landing weight. Those are the targets to which the pink got will move. Simply write them down and use them. I've found that extending flaps 20kt before that speed greatly improves cockpit visibility.Paul
