X58 Motherboards...need help choosing between 3

Featured Replies

The P6X58D is compared to the ASUS Rampage and is a very extremely overclock friendly i7 board, sans the onboardvoltage leads of the Rampage and yet it is a mid priced I7 board. The cool running chipset was also one of the main reasons why I started looking at this board compared to the issues with the EVGA Boards. What makes you say workstation, layout?
I read it somewhere, just don't know now anymore where... I also know that long time ago, I used to have a Premium motherboard, and it was definitely no gamer board but rather workstation - the question, what classifies WS vs gamer...P6X58D definitely looks gaming like, so that's different.Did you try to overclock yours?

Hey Word Not Allowed,Check out my sig, 4.48ghz on quiet air includes pumping 12 gigs of ram thru the IMC. How many boards allow you to do that with all dimms full?16+2 phase VRM design, 16-phase for vCore and extra 2-phase for QPI/Memory IMC = nice power efficiency, less heat = great overclocking. 100% Japan-made solid caps and notice the VRM sinks also have a bottom back plate on the back of the board helps keep things cool as well. Not that feedback is always the best measurement, but check the board out on Newegg, they have sold close to 100 boards in just over six weeks and then read the reviews. I'm not say this is the best extreme board, but I would say that it can compete at any level, solid features, with a bit of future proofing that in six months wont leave you regreting anything, and all at a mid price. Well, I paid about 2/3 what seems to be available to you ($290.Hey, do your own research and get what feels right for you.
Alright, Bob, I take you are right. I have no experience with eVGA, and I just checked the prices, they are on-par with other similar boards. Only classified sticks out a bit...My problem on choosing the board is I want to be sure it will OC up to 200mhz without much fuss, as I want to run the 920 @ 4.2Ghz.I had Gigabyte EX58-UD5 ordered, so I changed the order to P6X58D. Now seeing that it might not even be a "gamers" board, more or less workstation, and am I really gonna need USB3.0 and SATA3 in next 3 years? Besides I would have to wait for it a while...I have also, price-wise, been checking on the eVGA X58 SLI, it costs about 245

You'll need the BCLK at 210 MHz if you want 4.2 GHz on a 920. There are lots of folks doing that with this board. The active (Northbridge) fan on the eVGA board is removeable/replaceable. It's also almost imperceptibly quiet.I can find you bad reviews for every board out there. That said, none of the boards you're looking at are bad...but of course anyone can get the occasional bad one in a batch. How the company deals with that is important if you're unfortunate enough to get one of those, and my experience with ASUS technical support suggested that I needed to learn Chinese and fly to Taiwan myself to get a problem resolved with them.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO
Also For 4.2 just turn off speed stepping and run 21x a Blk of 200. 21 clock is unstable on a lot of boards though, not this one. I use 21x213 since 22 is not available on 920s.Since CPU over memory subsytem is what FSX is hungry for, I have to keep the ram from toasting the IMC, well all dimms fulll doesnt help (12 gigs is for crunching gobs of scenery in photoshop and GIS, not FSX).Forgot to mention one thing about the P6X58D; ASUS supports it o/c ram to 2000, board also supports up to 24gigs if you are ever going to need it, for something else besides FSX.

I did all the research I could find. Even read all the Newegg opinions...Anyway, if the board apparently runs BCLK of 200 easily, it's ok for me. I got good watercooling setup for the CPU.Anyway, when the board arrives, I'll let you know how it runs. Probably gonna be a week or two.

I have had the UD3R since May09 and it has been a great performer. The 920 is doing well at 180 blk x 21. The layout is not a problem for me. I have a thumping great Noctua NHU12P cooler on the i7 and it doesn't seem to get in the way of slots. The biggest grip in reviews I found was the position of the SATA ports but again it didn't seem to worry my build. I think the is so little between these boards nowadays. They are all very good.

Max
