Heavy, whos a Heavy?

Hello everyone...I am flying an American Airlines Boeing 757 (PW version) from KLAX to KSTL.I always thought that Boeing 757 here refered to as non heaveys due to there trust rating, but flight sim ATC seem to think they are heavy's.Are they or not?Kind RegardsKimberly. :-outta

The term HEAVY is a term ATC uses to separate aircraft for wake turbulence. It's based on max certificated takeoff weight, not thrust rating.HEAVY is an aircraft with a maximum certificated takeoff weight greater than 255,000 pounds.LARGE is an aircraft with a maximum certificated takeoff weight greater than 41,000 pounds up to 255,000 pounds.andSMALL is an aircraft with a maximum certificated takeoff weight less than 41,000 pounds.Originally the definition of a HEAVY aircraft was 300,000 pounds, which excluded the 757. But real-world experiences showed that the 757 produced just as severe wake turbulence as the other heavies, so the 757 was lumped in with the heavy aircraft. And thus uses the "heavy" after the callsign.Now it seems they've revised the official definition so that the 757 now fits in with the FAA definition.Cheers Woodreau

hi,the Callsign for a Heavy Jet is given to aircraft that are capable of operating at or above 255,000 lb. This is due to wake turbulence these aircrafts generate.so i think it would be yes,the 757 is a heavy ;-)
