[BufferPools] PoolSize=0 the holy grail of FSX performance...

Hi Bojote,It's me again. I just remembered something. Shortly after I installed Windows 7, I re-installed Vista driver 185.50 in order to eliminate problems with a newer one. When I tested my system (please review my earlier post and specs below) it was a mess with flashing and jumping. Could that have been because of the older, pre windows 7 driver? What do you think?Stephen
Hi Stephen, Actually.. you make a point... LOTs of users are using 18x.xx drivers, because, the general consensus is that the 180's are best for FSX... I have the LATEST nVidia drivers on Win7, something like 196.xxIt would be interesting to know what drivers are using those having success with PS=0, also remember that this tweak is closely related to your hardware capabilities, it is not a coincidence all those reporting success have 1GB video cards, also remember that using nhancer with aggresive settings for AA & AF do increase your video memory usage considerably, possibly negating the effects of the tweak. As you see, LOTS of things to consider.. but, there must something else... not just Win7/Vista.. there must be something all people having success have in common! newest drivers? no nHancer? our only hope is that the 'gurus' test this in their labs, until then.. everything we say or assume is pure speculation :) Nick said something about the need to 'look into this further'.. so, I assume when he has the time, he can make some more tests and report back, perhaps more objectively that my Holy Grail posts :)

I'm glad Mitch!can you post ALL your system specs and also if you are using nHancer? what nVidia drivers etc? I'm trying to see what is the common denominator among people having success.

---------------------------------------------------------------Stephen, I'm using nVidia's 195.62 driven by the latest nHancer software. I just had to grab FRAP again, and then take four shots of my island hopping today, with the tweak in place. Simply excellent. They are under BUFFER POOLS in the Screen Shot Forum. Smooth turns, great texture rendering. An excellent tip.Mitch

Hi Stephen,The Nvidia Drivers I'm using are 196.21. I know there are bug reports about overclocking software not working with these drivers however, I've had no problems with this set.As far as nHancer, I'm using Nicks settings with the possible exception of Anti-Aliasing=Combined 8xSQ and Ansiotropic Filtering at 16X. They may be his settings as well, I don't remember.

Mike,So you have overclocking software and not bios setting with no problems with 196.21? I have an ASUS board so use their Ai Suite. If I understood you correctly then I will download it, and reset BF to 0 and see what happens. I may be crazy, and no doubt I am, but hey, I always have been an irresponsible risk taker! :) Thanks Mitch, the pictures are beautiful.Stephen

Stephen, it seems both Mitch and Mike have 19x.xx drivers... I do as well, and the three of us are having success with BP=0, you reported problems, but you have 18x drivers, if you already have good performance with the 18x drivers, don't risk it!

Hi Stephen,The board came overclocked from the factory, the 196.21 driver did not effect the overclock. I'm not using software to overclock the board.

Does anyone reading this know if the 196.21 driver causes overclock software problems, particularily with the ASUS suite? I am going to sleep on it, but I think I am willing to give it a go by going from 185.50 and changing the BP to 0 just to see if bojote is correct. I think his theory may have real merit. The only thing that makes me hesitate somewhat is the fact that everyone who says it really works for them has i7 CPUs with more and faster ram than I do. Unless I mess up royally, I can always revert back and change the CFG again. It's not like I am jumping out of an airplane with a parachute, is it? (famous last words)Stephen

Hi,So far the overclocking software packages that I've been able to find that are having problems with Nvidia's 196.21 drivers are.1. RivaTuner2. EVGA Precision3. Galaxy MagicPanel HDI see no mention of Asus, that doesn't mean there is no problem, I've just been unable to find any complaints about Nvidia's 196.21 drivers and Asus. My understanding is Beta drivers have been released that have fixed the problem 196.34.

Mike,I am not thinking very well. My CPU is overclocked with ASUS Suite, but my EVGA 275GTX is overclocked with EVGA Precision. I will look into 196.34. Thanks Captain.Stephen

EVGA Precision overclocking works with the latest version and 196.21. I tried 196.34 beta but had to revert (lousy on my PC). BP 0 with TMB 60 works quiet well for me too. There are occasional artifacts and white flashes but the all over performance and smoothness is excellent. Maybe the next nVidia driver will be the holy grail... (j/k)

Cheers

Heiko
