[BufferPools] PoolSize=0 the holy grail of FSX performance...

Featured Replies

LOL Yes, I do. Every evening I think 'Now I am going to FLY' and I always end up tweaking. However, not all is pleasant: just now I wanted to compare various FSAA settings once more, but now my system is STUCK in FSAA 2x... I even reinstalled nHancer to check 4xS and so on, but whatever I do, FSAA won't change and is stuck... Even if I keep in using this setting in FSX, I don't like this... I want to be able to try different things too! Bummer...
Oh No! You are now in FS nirvana. You have finally tweaked and fiddled until you broke something. :( The good news is there is always a way to back up and back out. Someone here should be able to figure it out...Stephen

Hi Everyone,I've seen a few posts in regards to artifacts, I had the same problem while panning, it turned out to be the AffinityMask setting. My system does not like a setting of 7. Once I removed this setting from FSX's config file the artifacts were completly gone.I am using the AffinityMask setting again at 12. I get one to two momentary artifacts while panning, not that big of a deal. But I do see an increase of 5fps using AffinityMask so I'll keep using it.

And tomorrow I will just FLY. Promise. Honest. I won't tweak. Really. Believe me. I won't. I just won't. I refuse to tweak anymore. I will only fly. FLY!
sure...sure...the same day that pigs fly too!Stephen

Hm, I just read Mike_CFII_MEL's post about the affinity mask... totally forget about that one... but it isn't tomorrow yet... however it never worked before... er...

Well, i tried the same flight that gave me texture corruption when using BP=0 and TBM=70. Now i made the flight with BP=0 and TBM=60 with no corruption and smooth flight. That's definitely um improvement over TBM=70.Next step is to try a longer flight. If all is good, i may stay with BP=0 instead of BP=300.000.000 that i used before because the flight seems a little bit smoother, specially when looking at clouds and water. I use affinitymask=14.

Same here, with TBM=60 and BP=0. I also changed the fsx.exe compatibilty to vista sp2, because I observed graphic artifacts. For what I can say now: FSX runs much smoother (less stuttering) and in some places with higher fps. I still observe texture flushing here and then. So far I tried: Venice scenery (Aerosoft) which is my stutter favorite as well as Lisbon (Aerosoft)t and MA EDDF (wit PMDG 747). Altogether it seems that this tweak is working on my system. Thanks *******, and all the other contributorsHarry

Nick, I didn't know that you recommended no BP entry for i7 system. Is this new?
FranklaWhat I suggest is a user must test and see what works and doesnt workWhat I posted in the FSX tuning thread, which is getting a review and being reworked, is to give users the settings to look at, not tell them they must set 'this' or 'that' value. What I posted has always gotten my builds in the ballpark because I do not run vanilla OS installs, make sure my OS is tuned properly and the drivers are installed correctly, make sure I do not have background programs running (I dont use 'end it all" software either) and spec the hardware to do the job.Its all trial and error when it comes to what works and doesn't. There have been many i7 systems I have seen use BP as well as Affinitymask=14. There is no one-size-fits-all solution :(

This has worked GREAT!SystemXPx64285GTX - 182.50 driversNhancer- Nicks settingsTBM-40Locked 30FPSBP=0smooth.....I do get some artifacts..occasionally...but they immediately go away...and the performance increase seems to be worth it.All I can say is thankyou..it has been an amazing find for me......I bet I get 20-30% performance boost!

Well, I've been messing around the same as everybody else has......tweak, fly, tweak with this BUFF=0 and TBM.Well, I KNOW that the BUFF at 0 WITH a TBM of 400 does work, and without artifacts. I know, because with the discussion (per thread) of the TBM, of which I had not touched since adding in my BUFF=0 entry, it ran fine. I decided to look at exactly what I had it at..and it was at 400. No crashing, etc.I decided to then reduce it and play around in the 40 (stock setting) to 80 TBM range. FSX runs fine without artifacts anywhere on my system between 40-80 TBM and BUFFERPOOLS at 0. So, if you have similar spec's to my system, I can't see why you could not use these two settings and have stable display. One thing I did find though, was that you need to use the FPS Limiter. That makes it all work. Also, don't reduce the Limiter screen to the task bar. If you do, you run the risk of creating an FPS (large green font) readout that does appear to be in a corrupted state. Just crank on the FPS Limiter and leave the full window alone as you then fire up FSX.With the above, I have had great fluid movement, great banks, good pans etc. This BUFFERPOOLS=0 WORKS!Caveat though. As stated by the O.P., you need to have certain system spec's in place to MAKE it work for you.POST EDIT: My messin' around shows that a TBM of 60 gives the smoothest scenery advancement of anything between 40 and 80 on my system. Each 10 digits did not dramatically affect the performance one way or another. I just PERCEIVE that 60 is the best of between 40 and 80 by viewing the rendered animation. Your mileage can vary...

I will DL the new drivers and try them...182.50 are so good tho...which one's are you talking about guys...also will the HDR/ENB work with these (It is a must)abulaafia, if I remove NHANCER...will I loose my fantastic Image quality..?Nhancer has made my image with no shimmering and great AA/AF...So you say to disable Nhancer...are you seting the AA, from the NVIDIA control panel..and what settings...(is it as good as with Nhancer?)

back..after intensive testing....the new driver 196.21...removes the artifacts for me!!! you were right abu!Altho you had suggested to ditch NHANCER, and I tried that...using different approcahes for my AA, such as in the NV control panel alone, then also combined with ingame AA.Without Nhnacer, I still get shimmering, and a lttle tearing even with Vsync enabled and AA maxed etc..I tried everything...and it was OK-but I spoiled with Nhancer-no doubt about-a massive difference. So I ran Nhancer and set her up NickN's settings, with the 196.21 (BTW-I am a diehard 182.50 fan)...and with this BP=0......like silk...No FPS tradeoff running NHANCER but the image quality is SO much better, for me anyways...Again...this has been an amazing tweak...XPx64 (BTW-I bought W7x64, installed it for FSX for 2 months, Now I'm back to XPx64-more smooth, no doubt about it)285GTX 196.21E6850 @ 3.8Ghzok/ my settings/tweaks:BP=0TBM=40Nhancer set up like NickNHdr/Enb enabled!Running 4096 reslutionAll this running Rex2,TongassX, FTX, and my high def aircraft for my testing...absolutely increased my performance at least 20%- it was already great..I now can bump up my autogen...(which is now at dense)

in dx9 mode my GTX285 (o/c to 720 or something) runs at 30-95% GPU utilization.I am using the FTX scenary so perhaps that puts extra load on?.. Does that sound right for dx9 ?in DX10 it sits between 30-40%Also all you peoples with gtx285 who posted up results.. you using dx9 or dx10 ?thanks :)

as for 'overclocking' the GPU and seeing any benefits in FSX.. well, I'm not sure I'd agree, and you can easily this see for yourself.. just notice CPU usage AND GPU usage while using FSX.... CPU is always maxed out, while the GPU seems to running with a VERY light load.. HOWEVER.. in your specific case, CORE Mhz for the Video card would NOT be my concern... I would be looking at the shader clock AND memory clock, they are VERY sensitive to FSX, specially because FSX uses huge amounts of VRAM, and also makes use of shaders extensively.

Hi guys,This is the topic of the year!!!Now I have found the ultimate tip. It is a two step process:1- Right click your Microsoft flight simulator X icon (which you can find on your desktop if you have not found it yet). Rename it to Microsoft TWEAK simulator X (Case sensitive)2- Change the aircraft icon to a screwdriver icon. That's it! You will enjoy countless hours of tweaking simulation and maybe you will end up flying sometimes (when you have difficulty tweaking) :( .Having said that, I have tried that BP=0 thing and it works for me (no kidding this time) so far .Cheers

DX9.... :(
