[BufferPools] PoolSize=0 the holy grail of FSX performance...

Featured Replies

That part is some what easy, in looking at the ap and log file for instance of a test I started out with 70-80mb Vram used, jumped into FSX and it hit 700MB and then rose quickly to 900 as I loaded another AC and then as I flew it climbed up to 1018MB, going into the FSX startup menu alone it hit 200-300mb.Again only relevant to my settings with high SSAA, Lod Radius of 6.500000 etc etc.So I think we can get a gain from info but you still have to seperate the filtering needs vs also all what you are telling FSX to disply multiplied by how IT responds = the need for a good shrink or at least a nice stiff drink.
That is the exact point.. we dont know what part of that is being allocated directly to FSX for geometry buffering which is what BP does in FSX, and what part is being used for other processes taking place. I would also like to get to the bottom of this too and be able to post a reason for it that people can use to evaluate their situationI'll drink to that! But even if we get to that point, it will most likely remain a matter of trial and error for everyone, regardless

Reporting back:I changed the bufferpools to 0 to test. It gave me flashing textures and sectional blackouts (square black ground textures). The flashing was the most disturbing but there was also stuttering and jumping. After reverting back to buffer pools of 550000000 and a restart, FSX went back to its normal smoothness. Setting BF to 0 might work for some but not on my machine. Thank you though for your suggestion for it is always fun to test ideas. That is how I got this thing running so fast and smooth, by much trial and error. StephenBy the way I use Nhancer and FPS Limiter set at 24fps and run with display sliders full right except autogen which is back a single notch.

any chance you can repeat that but also use GPU-Z to report how much memory you were using at the time of the crash? One thing you can test that CONSIDERABLY lowers VRAM utilization is the scenery Level of Detail. a medium setting lowers 200-300 MB of VRAM!!Also, high AA settings increase VRAM utilization dramatically.PoolSize=0 will NOT make FSX crash if it is using LESS than 50% of your VRAM memory, however VRAM usage among people here differs greatly! mostly due to AA preferences, Scenery Level of Detail, resolution etc.

Bojote,Sorry my report seemed a bit misleading. My system did not actually crash but was under what appeared to be considerable stress with flashing textures, black squares, stuttering and jumping. I think I will pass setting it up that way again as it took a restart to settle it down. I think there is perhaps merit in the theory you suppose, so it may work for others since it has positvely worked for you. I have a large number of tweaks, modifications and addons, over 100G's worth, so there may have been a reaction from one or a number of those. Can't risk upsetting the applecart just for a reading. It was a major degradation of the excellent performance that is normally the case. On bufferpools, a while back I upped it to 550000000 upon someones suggestion and that seemed to make a definite improvement on smoothness.Even though your suggestion did not work for me I appreciate you sharing your experience.Stephen

Hi,Well, I've given up on the following tweaks, they do nothing for FSX on my state-of-the-art system.BUFFERPOOLS, AFFINITYMASK and TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT.

Come on now Mike,Be a sport! Tinker with it until you break something! What else is MSFS for?Stephen

Hi Stephen,I tinker way more than I fly in FSX, its a damn shame. I'm sorry but Aces missed the boat on FSX big time. I do not want to see anyone lose their job. However, I'm glad they have been disbanded. Maybe now we'll get a from the ground up simulator that takes full advantage of todays hardware, even if its from another company.

Mike,I'm really enjoying FSX SP2 with my new system. I could never go back to fs9 and I don't see myself replacing this platform..Especially with what's coming soon from Orbx.

MSFS

yeah i have mine set to 16S (and tried 32) which i assumed which be better quality ???Tried all the settings though. I Dont get autogen shimmer, only tree's. Its not to bad or distracting but not 100% quality like dx9.

Why not Combined 8x? Gives me less shimmering. Also recommended by Nick Needham.

LOL. FSX should have a tinker log book so you can log the number of changes you've made to your settings and the time spent doing them. Probably would exceed the flight hours for some people.Back to BP=0. Thought I'd give it another test and noticed I didn't have as much texture loading as the last time I tested it (although I did get a few temporary autogen spikes). One thing I did notice though was a drop in frame rates. From about 75fps to 65fps (using very light graphics settings and in windowed mode). So, anyone wanting to try this tweak may also like to keep an eye on their framerates to make sure they are not adversely affected. As per usual, your results may vary.

lol and rewardsI have a GTX260 and i'm currently using a BP setting of 70000000 to avoid sound issues and white squares.Btw, does anybody have a hint to reduce flickering issues with nVidia drivers? No matter what driver settings i use, some sceneries are a flickering hell and i'm pretty sure that it isn't the fault of the sceneries since no author would release a scenery with problems like that.

Aerosoft would...http://www.forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?sh...mp;#entry196569 :(
The textures (e.g. Taxiway lines) are having Mip Maps and i've already experimented with the LOD BIAS settings and i'm still getting the flickering.Looks like z-fighting.

nills, this suggestion will not sound logic to you, but I suggest you try it: set water effects to either Max 2.0 (which is full right) or the notch before

Thanks but i wasn't able to see an improvement with that. With BP=0 (and water=max), i see black squares and the flight isn't smooth. With high BP settings i'm getting sound distortions and anomalies with aircraft model. Now i will delete my FSX.cfg..Big thanks for the very long legs of FSX...
