Is it worth upgrading from 4gb to 8gb of ram

I currently have 4gb of DDR 2 ram in my system running at 1016mhz Due to my motherboard to upgrade to 8gb of ram I need to use either 2 4gb chips of pc8500 ram (1066 MHz) which is very expensive.Or the other option is use 4 2gb chips of pc6400 ram (800mhz) this I can afford.However in having more ram I would be losing out on memory speed 1016 down to 800. With this in mind can anyone suggest whether there is a benefit to upgrading to 8gb given the reduction in memory speed. Am I likely to see fsx perform any better? I do have a fairly smooth system but when Approaching areas such as heathrow I do notice a big performance hit and I want to reduce this hit.Thankstom

Save until you can afford the better RAM. It will be more worth the wait.

I don't think it is - on a 64bit system I've never seen FSX get close to using up 4GB. Still went with 4GB on my new machine and it's perfectly fine.

Why couldn't you use 4 sticks of 2 GB 1066 MHz ram? That's what I'm using.I am very happy to have 8 gigs. There are times when Photoshop has taken upwards of 6 GB ram. I can't quite remember how much I've hit with FSX. I'd guess around 2-2.5 GB. Usually it is around 1.5 GB.

Hi,4GB is just fine for FSX.Performance willl not be affected with more.You need to over clock your CPU or turn down your sliders for better performance.

My motherboard is a bit limited in that it will let you use 4 sticks of ram is they are DDR2 PC6400. If you want anything faster like PC8500 then you can only use 2 sticks. I can use DDR3 ram but again that is limited to 2 sticks. It seems that 2 out of the 4 slots supports faster speeds and yet the other 2 dont.I seemed a good idea at the time as it allowed me to use my motherboard over a wider range of hardware but on the face of it, i feel a bit restricted. But having said that my system is stable and running well.As for overclocking, i have my system oc'd from 3.16 to 4GHz and i have to say that is the best thing i ever did for fsx.Perhaps im just being greedy. I usually dont fly to huge airports anyway, but the pending release of the fligh sim labs concorde may change that. It does look one amazing addon to be.Tom

Well i had contemplated that and after going through loads of forums, it seems that the improvement in performance from DDR2 to DDR3 is not noticeable, which is surprising considering it is the next step in memory.The information i picked up on was that more memory was better than faster memory. I suppose there would be a point where memory speed would be noticeable but this it seems is when your comparing the two ends of the spectrum.I was just thinking that having 8gb would create some breathing space for my pc, even if FSX doesnt use 4gb there are other processes that run in the background that will eat into tht aswell. Anyhow if im honest im getting good performance from fsx on the whole so i should really stop being so picky.Tom
