F-18 Hornet trips over on carrier landing...

Featured Replies

I have trained for the carrier landing with Hornet in FSX, and most of my landings are succesful.I would like to know why I sometimes trip over when the hook catches the wires, and is the Hornet really so fragile that I cannot land it in normal way (main wheels first and then the front one).Does my plane trip over if I come even a little bit sideways to the runway? Also, why does my front gear sink into the deck sometimes crashing my nose into it and failing the mission? Thanks in advance,

I think the arrested landing is so sudden that a little extra flare causes the front wheel to drop violently on the deck. I used to put my eye position up high to see over the nose for landing. This higher position caused me to approach with higher than normal angle of attack and hence a sudden nose drop.

If you have a look here: http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=281.0 there is some great tips, also , search the forum, there are some revised .cfg files available that alter the values that make you tip over so easily. I have installed these and it works a treat.Cheers,Mark

I was having same problem. In another forum I got tip to only have 1/3 to 1/4 fuel, that way you can come in slower when everthing is line up on your hud. I am no expert but they said it is not realistic to land with a full tank. This helped me out quite abit with landings on carrier. You can also try Dino Cattaneo, T-45C Goshawk which is alot easier than the F-18 for practice. Useing the hud and setup for landing is the same. There is also a update for the hud like there is for the F-18 ir you have'nt already got it, it is much better than default. Hope this helps. You should also get aicarriers2 and the USS Nimitz & USS Eisenhower Version 2.0 by Javier Fernandez, both graet addons for carrier landings. Have fun!

Thanks for the tips! I noticed that I have cut the power and flared on landing all the time... Those tips are great! Somehow I land better with 99% fuel...

Ok, I made a saved approach flight about 4 miles from the carrier and flew it 10 times. 8 times of 10 the front wheel sunk into the deck, 1 time of 10 the right wheels did it and 1 landing was perfect. Every time I approached at 130-140 knots and the rate of descent was under 500ft/min. Can someone post a link to CFG which prevents the wheels from sinking? I couldn't find any...Thanks!
