FSX Freezes/BSODs in Win7? You Need to Check the DMP File!

Featured Replies

Hi All.For some time, I have been plagued by freezes in FSX followed by BSODs, which caused my system to reboot. Here are my specs:Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bitIntel i7-965 Extreme OC @ 4.0 GHzATI Radeon HD 4870 X26GB Corsair Dominator DDR3-1866 MHz Memory (TR3X6G1866C9DF)ASUS X58 P6T Deluxe MotherboardCreative Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty ProIt happened almost every time I ran FSX. I assumed that it was due to me stressing out my system (I had overclocked my CPU, RAM and GPU). I tried an endless assortment of FSX.cfg tweaks and video card settings, and even disabled all of my overclocks, but still got the BSODs. In Windows 7, every time there is a BSOD, the blue screen includes a message stating that the system is creating a memory dump. After searching on the internet for some time, I discovered a way to read this .DMP file (this may be old news for some, but it was a revelation to me).The process takes a few steps, and requires you to download the Windows Driver Kit, which contains the Debugging Tools. Here is a link that walks you through the process:http://windows7themes.net/how-to-open-dmp-...-windows-7.htmlIn my case, I discovered that the feezes and BSODs had nothing to do with FSX! Instead, it was a faulty driver for my Linksys WUSB54G wireless adapter. Windows update automatically uploaded a new driver, but the driver was not suitable for 64-bit Win7. I downloaded the proper driver from the Railink site and now all is well. The BSODs happened during FSX only because (I assume) calls were being made to the wireless adapter in conjunction with real-time weather, causing the faults. So if you are plagued with BSODs during FSX, the problem may be completely unrelated to FSX itself. If you are running Win7 and experience BSODs, it is worth checking the DMP file rather than guessing in the dark. Hope this helps someone in the same boat.

Great stuff! Thanks for the post.Everybody please note the Windows Driker Kit works for 32- and 64-bit Windows 7
