Got my GTX 285, now lots and lots of FSX problems

Featured Replies

Hi all ... I really need help here. I've been chasing the pot of gold at the end of the FSX rainbow for about 35 days now, and I'm about running out of the will to carry on. Endless tweaking, tuning, driver switching, add-on tools, and now have even resorted to trading video cards. And I'm still having problems.Ok I was told that DX9, with nhancer's help can look even better than DX10. I now know that's true, but the problem is, for me, DX9 is introducing all sorts of problems. My system specs are in my sig. My FSX setup is as follows:Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit24" Dell LCD @ 1920x108021.5" Acer LCD @ 1920x1080FSX w/SP2REX, GEX, UTX, and FTX installedFSGenesis meshes installed in a few placesGTX 285 video with the latest 197.xx driversnhancer 2.57With 8xS AA, and 16x AF, FSX looks amazing in DX9. However, when I run in DX9 i have two major problems:1. I can't go to full-screen at all -- if I go from windowed mode to full-screen, FSX ALWAYS attempts to force the sim to the 2nd monitor! This only happens in DX9 mode. It goes to the 2nd monitor, both screens stay black but I still get audio, and I can tell it's on the 2nd monitor because the fraps counter shows up. In the Nvidia control panel, as well as Windows, my main monitor, the 24" Dell is identified as monitor #1, and is set as my main. The Acer is identified as monitor #2 in both places. So for DX9, i'm forced to windowed mode (with no vsync, which gives me horrifice tearing) or give up my 2nd monitor. 2. In DX9, I also get texture flashing on ground textures. it's fairly frequent, and very jarring to the eye. I can see geometric shapes flashing to empty white textures. It really ruins the experience for me.Now I know a lot of you have very similar rigs to mine, have Nvidia cards, and run DX9 on one, two, even 3 monitors. I'd like to know why I can't. Incidentally this monitor problem of FSX insisting on going to the Acer, happened with my ATI card as well. I simply don't get it.I'm getting frazzled nerves from this, and have worked many hours trying to solve these problems. Honestly, if I could get vsync to work in DX10 mode, I'd say screw it and just go back to that. But if there's hope for DX9, I'd like to do that instead.Help! please? :(

Just to confirm, have you followed Nick's guide and setup Nhancer as he suggested? I run into the corrupt texture problem but I believe that problem spans across ATi/Nvidia. Other than that I have pretty good performance overall.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, in fact I was just coming back to edit that in, that I followed NickN's guide to the letter, and my nhancer settings, and in-game settings, match his.So are you saying that the texture flashing happens to everyone? or just certain unlucky people? I've seen a lot of videos of people flying in DX9 mode, and don't see the flashing.

Not too many people have FSX on multi-monitors. I did a forum search for multimonitors and came up with several discussions concerning setting up FSX on multi-monitors. If you haven't already, I would check some of those posts out. There may be even more advice provided over at the video card forum here on AVSIM. Never heard of the flashing with DX10 preview turned off. You may have a defective card or it's o/c'd too much. Nick's guide isn't much help as his advice is for one monitor. I plan on getting dual monitors one of these days so hope you get it figured out soon!Best regards,Jim

I run FSX on multi monitors with no problems at all. Try the 182.50 - I had lots of issues with the 197.xx and the beta. Do you have your monitors set up as dual or cloned? Set each minitor individually using the nvidia control panel. On my system the main monitor(#1) is on the right. I have heard that windows has some issues on occasion with the placement of monitors.I'd try reversing them AND change drivers. Be sure to go into safe mode and run a driver cleaner between changes.I use a GTX280Vic

Ziffel, you and I have similar setups so I will chime in here with my experience. I am not using a second monitor but perhaps the effect is similar.I am using the 197.13 drivers on my 260 and I have an issue with going full screen UNLESS I am outside the airplane when I switch. If I switch inside the cockpit either the display goes black, or I have a 2d panel with black windows - usually it's just a black screen. I think it's an nVidia thing as I had the same issues with my 9800 GTX+ as well. You might try that and see what you get - go to an outside view before switching to full screen.

Well my problem extends to even dropping to a menu, say, "Controls" or something. When I come back, whether i was full-screen when I went to the menu or not, it hangs on return. It sends the sim to the 2nd monitor. What I have found is that I can go into windows' display properties and disable the 2nd monitor, then at least it won't try to move the sim over there, however, it still won't return to full screen, i just get a black screen. then I have to hit Alt-Enter to go windowed, then again, and it will finally behave.

Vic I'm going to try your suggestions. Only thing is, I went to nvidia and looked and couldnt' find 182.50. I found 181.xx and everything else up to 197, except that one. Do you have it, or do you know where I can find it?I think it's a bit sad that I'd have to go to year old drivers for this. All my other 3d games are working perfectly on the 197's. Thanks to all for your help!

My edit window closed on the above post ... so I'll add this, I did find the 182.50 drivers on guru3d.com.That said, I think I've made up my mind on how I'm going to handle all these issues. There are so many variables involved with FSX, that it's hard to get it all to work together. I get tired of fighting with it. So anyway, what I'm doing is just going into windows control panel and shutting down the 2nd monitor before I fly. It's a pain in the arse, but oh well. The texture flashing seems to be reduced quite a bit when I turn off the 2nd monitor, so I'm just going to leave the 197's on for now and just live with it. Right now, using FPSLimiter and nhancer, the sim looks really, really good in DX9. So the occasional flashing will have to do. In DX10 you get bad texture flashing at airports, so you just about can't win. At least I can't seem to. Thanks to all for the replies.

I meant to reply to this too. I don't OC my video card at all, and I dont' think it's defective because the flashing doesn't occur in DX10, nor does it occur (or any other problems) in any other 3d games. And yes, if I ever find a solution to my multi-monitor problem, I'll be sure to let you know!

How did you go about removing ALL the old leftovers for the ATI drivers? You may want to look into using something simple like driversweeper to make sure all the entires are gone and then un-install your NV drivers, reboot and then re-install them.ATI drivers sux to remove...

Hi, yes, I did use driversweeper in safe mode to remove the ATI drivers. Thanks for the suggestion nonetheless.

Update:I found a tool called AutoHotkey (free, open-source) that will record macros, including mouse macros. So I created a macro with that to disable the 2nd monitor, and another to re-enable it. Now that process is a simple double-click. Things seem to be straightening out. A few small adjustments in nhancer, disable the 2nd monitor, then I flew in San Fran over dense city scenery for 30 minutes. I saw one texture flash, over the water, and that was it. Think I'm going to just go with this, as DX9 looks really, really good now.

I hope you have better luck than I getting rid of that behavior. That's exactly what I'm talking about. I have to go "alt+enter" and back again to resume normal display once I enter any menu or even come out of time compression, whatever. The one thing that does NOT seem to do this is when I save the flight. It always comes back to normal 3D mode after that.
