[HOW TO] Fixing dissapearing textures - The real FIX!

Featured Replies

I don't have disappearing textures and black screens, but I have the idea I should give this tweak a try nonetheless...! Right?
The tweak fixed a long time problem that I was having when my entire plane would loose its textures after about an hour of play - only the lights were on.. Then kapooo-wee, alls kinds of weirdness would occur.jja

*******,If you find a hidden cfg entry to enable cloud shadows, THAT will be the true Holy Grail!-John
Actually John cloud shadows are implemented but never enabled and made it in the RTM version of FSX so the basis is available in FSX ;-)@******* thanks for sharing the tweak and for the hard work, but I have the feeling this is only for the 64 bit folks out there.Anyway I'm always open minded going to try and see during my development test cycles what it does :-)Cheers,

Ulfb,Did you leave TML at 1024? That's the one setting I don't understand about *******' settings ... he says make it "30" whereas the default is 3. I show default of 1024, and up to 4096, as you mentioned.

Well, this old fox is truly gobsmocked! I've made the requisite fsx.cfg file changes, forced a shader recompile, and watched in amazement as my average fps increased ~+10, and I now have no ground texture flashing around my WIP 33MO-Leaming Field scenery......even while having my current super-secret development project loaded... :(
Just a quick question, how do you force a shader re-compile? :( thanksGreg

******* is talking about two different settings:

[GRAPHICS]TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024[Display]TextureMaxLoad=30

I don't know if the TextureMaxLoad setting has any relevance in FSX. I haven't tested if it has any effect.

Here is the post in the other thread where you have all the cfg changes.

Is it possible to enable cloud shadows on the ground? I notice they appear on the water

I tried everything he said, including disabling nhancer and giving FSX control of AA/AF, turned of vsync, etc. For me, this was a bust ... I lost 5 fps, and it looks much worse, due to FSX's poor AA/AF, and no vsync for me is just not doable. I get bad screen tearing and I just can't handle it. I went back to my nhancer setup, 8xS AA, 16x AF, vsync on, and reset all that stuff I added back to the way it was, and I'm back to getting 20fps sustained over a very dense downtown San Fran, and 30fps (using FPSlimiter) over non-city areas, and it looks stunning. I think I'll just leave well enough alone.

You can leave everything alone, but it is a good idea to at least put the HIGHMEMFIX=1 line in your config to ensure you won't lose VC textures with complex aircraft, if you have ever had that problem. It should not effect performance.

I just made a fast benchmarking over London City with different settings for the setting:

[Display]TextureMaxLoad=n

I tested with 1, 30, 100, 500 and 1000, whatever these settings mean. I haven't read any explanation other than ******* remark "Default is 3 (same as above, we need to make video texture transfers *fast* so it won't affect low latency devices)".No impact on average fps at all. No noticable effect on graphics quality. Texture loading seems to be the same.Could you please explain what effect I should expect?

That's nice. Really nice.With bufferfpools = 0 tweak alone, I got much more fluid animation without stutters, but FSX was unstable, and it could crash my graphics card any minute, usually during quick panning around in dense areas.Now with bufferpools = 0 and this HIGHMEMFIX/STALE_BUFFER_THRESHOLD tweak, I tested flying over FTX Seattle with high autogen during a storm panning the view like a mad man without a single crash. Same with Concorde X, no graphics corruption when switching from fullscreen to window mode or when navigating the menus when FSX uses more than 2GB memory. It really works, at least for me :)It's not miracle tweak that will give you twice the fps you used to have, but anyway, it greatly improves overall experience in the sim for me. Frames unlimited, very dense autogen and no stutters :DBTW, the only changes I made are HIGHMEMFIX, STALE_BUFFER_THRESHOLD and

Sure, just try Shaders 3.0 as ******* explains. Simple as that :( Problem is that FSX only support Shader Model 2 and 1.http://blogs.msdn.com/sebby1234/archive/20...-be-edited.aspxhttp://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtop...p;#entry1740709The REX people is working on a solution: http://realenvironmentxtreme.com/forum/ind...hp?topic=4769.0

Thanks. I did leave HighMemFix=1 in there.

FSX 'does' support SM3.0 in fact, I have used SM3.0 clouds as you can see in the screenshots on this posts:http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtop...p;#entry1740709by default, FSX includes two 'hidden' config variables in the [GRAPHICS] section:ALLOW_SHADER_20=1ALLOW_SHADER_30=0try forcing them to ALLOW_SHADER_20=0ALLOW_SHADER_30=0and you will see ALL shader effects dissapear... then tryALLOW_SHADER_20=0ALLOW_SHADER_30=1and they re-appear (but not OPTIMIZED to SM3 because they were compiled to SM1.1 or SM2.0)in order to change SM in FSX you need to 'mod' the shader files compile functions... a 'compile' function looks like this:compile ps_30compile vs_30ps = Pixel Shadervs = Vertex Shaderchanging:ALLOW_SHADER_20=0ALLOW_SHADER_30=1and doing the corresponding 'mods' is enough.. However I ALREADY TRIED and the results were terrible (granted, some things like water and clouds look AMAZING) but it messes up things like reflections. ... so, please.. don't try at home ;)
